As the starting goalie for the Penn State men’s lacrosse team, sophomore Will Schreiner performs a ritual each time he steps into the cage just before the opening faceoff. He taps the crossbar with his stick and his hands, then looks up and delivers the same message to the man he replaced under horrifying circumstances.

“I always tell Connor I’m going to protect this [goal] for him,” said Schreiner.

Connor Darcey has been gone for nearly 11 months, gone since that awful day in June when the Nittany Lions’ coaches and players, scattered around the country in early summer, got the call they are still confronting and processing. That a tragic car accident had taken the life of their charismatic leader. As they wound through the 2016 season, a win over then-

No. 1 Denver in late March brought Penn State back onto the national scene. A week later in a win against Ohio State, Schreiner, a sophomore from Kemblesville, Pa., made a career-high 15 saves. “We don’t talk about winning for Connor. We talk about playing with a spirit that would make him proud,” Peter Toner, Penn State’s defensive coordinator, said of Darcey — a loud, funny, brash and fi ery competitor. Senior midfi elder James Burke, who was his best friend, wore his number 16 this season. “It felt awkward stepping into the goal. I’d spent every day last year with Connor, learned from him. What a leader,” Schreiner said. “It still didn’t seem real at times that he was gone. This was the fi rst time I’d felt that kind of loss.”
