Chen withdraws from World, World Junior Championships

Nathan Chen,

the 2016 U.S. bronze medalist, underwent left hip surgery on Jan. 27. The surgery was performed by Dr. Catherine Robertson, assisted by Dr. Alexandra Schwartz, at UC San Diego Health, which is a member of the United States Olympic Committee’s National Medical Network.

Chen suffered an avulsion injury to his

left hip during a jump attempt in the exhibi- tion following the 2016 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Jan. 24 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Chen was performing in the Skating Spectacular after having earlier won his first championship-level medal. Chen’s rehabilitation will begin in San Di-

ego and is tentatively scheduled to continue at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colo- rado Springs. Chen is expected to make a full recovery and return to the ice with restrictions in eight to 10 weeks.

Chen, the 2015 Junior Grand Prix Final

champion, was expected to compete at the 2016 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Cham-

pionships and the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. Tomoki Hiwatashi, the 2016 U.S. junior champion, is the first al- ternate to the World Junior Team and will compete March 14–20 in Debrecen, Hungary. Grant Hochstein, who finished fourth at the 2016 U.S. Championships, will make his World Championships debut March 28–April 3 in Boston.

Dillon named director of high performance development

Justin Dillon,

a former coach and choreographer who has served on various athlete and coaching commit- tees, is the director of high perfor- mance develop- ment at U.S. Figure Skating.

Dillon began

his duties at head- quarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Feb. 8. “I’m excited about continuing the strong

tradition at U.S. Figure Skating of cultivating great athletes and creating quality programs for them and their coaches,” Dillon said. “I look forward to working with the people here to maximize the opportunities for our athletes around the country and around the globe.”

A former member of Team USA, Dillon

has worked with many of the country’s top singles athletes, served on the faculty of pro- grams and camps offered by U.S. Figure Skat- ing, and has been active in the leadership of the organization, including serving as the past chair of the Singles Development Subcom- mittee and, most recently, as coaching repre- sentative on the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors. Dillon’s focus will be on the individual

development of the junior international selec- tion pool athletes and their coaches, in addi- tion to identifying and working with the most talented athletes and their coaches below this level, in guiding them toward reaching their potential as future members of Team USA. The new position will report to Mitch

Moyer, senior director of Athlete High Perfor- mance; and will also work closely with Kelly Vogtner, senior director of Athlete Develop- ment.

Dillon, who has spent the last two de-

cades in the Bay Area, said he’s looking forward to working and living in Colorado Springs, but admits he’s still getting used to what the cold weather brings. “I’m a little bit nervous about driving on

the ice and not slipping,” he joked. “Definite- ly different than skating, where I feel I have much more control than operating my car. “I’m just looking forward to being part of

a really good team and to try to use the skills and experience that I have to best serve the association.”

A one of a kind skating experience.
