Alcoa Plans to Invest $60M in R&D Aerospace manufacturer Alcoa,
Pittsburgh, has announced plans to invest $60 million at its techni- cal center in New Kensington, Pa., to expand its 3-D printing capabilities.
The aluminum and titanium
producer intends the facility to fo- cus on developing metal powders to use in additive manufacturing, as well as advancing the printing process and product design. The initiative will target the aerospace market, plus customers in the automotive, medical and building
and construction markets. “The (alloy) powders need to
be improved upon, they need to be cost effective, and they need to work better in the additive printing process,” said Ray Kilmer, chief technology officer, Alcoa. “What’s new now is the machines are getting better, faster and cheaper. Alcoa is stepping into the process so we can get the perfor- mance and the cost to where they need to be.” Construction of the new facil- ity is expected to be completed
Accuride Wins Two AME Awards for 2015 Te Association for Manu-
facturing Excellence (AME) has announced that Accuride Corp., Evansville, Ind., will receive 2015 AME Excellence Awards for its operation in Erie, Pa., and metalcasting facility in Rockford, Ill. AME representatives will visit both facilities in September to officially recognize each. Addi- tionally, both plants also will be honored during the AME 2015 International Conference, Oct. 19-23 in Cincinnati. The AME Excellence Award
recognizes North American manufacturing plants that have demonstrated excellence in manufacturing and business. “Accuride truly embod- ies what the AME Excellence Award stands for—achieving excellence throughout the en- terprise,” said Barbara Morrison, president and CEO, AME. “An achievement this big demon- strates that Accuride employees at all levels are engaged and committed to the lean journey.” Accuride also received the AME Excellence Award in 2014 for its facility in Hender- son, Ky. “Receiving three AME

in early 2016, with the goal of 100 new full-time jobs by 2017. The $60 million project has been helped by $10 million in grants and tax abatements from state, county and local governments. Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development will provide a $450,000 grant and $180,000 in tax credits linked to job creation. Alcoa also is expected to apply for a $2 million, low-interest loan from the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority.
