Metalcaster Cuts Power Consumption With Lighting Upgrade Ashland Foundry & Machine

Works Inc., Ashland, Pa., has upgrad- ed the lighting in its casting facility. T e project, which included $109,000 in incentives from Pennsylvania’s PPL Electric Utilities, included the replace- ment of metal halide fi xtures in the 215,000-sq.-ft. facility with an LED lighting system from Smart Start Lighting, Long Branch, N.J. Ashland executives believe the new lighting system will improve effi ciency

and reduce energy consumption by as much as 85%. T e steel and iron casting facility has saved more than $85,000 since deployment. “Due to the harsh conditions, lighting has always posed a chal- lenge in this environment, requiring frequent maintenance and replace- ments, which took a toll on both our fi nancial and personnel resources,” said Alden Roberts, facilities super- intendent, Ashland Foundry. “We are

amazed at the level of control and fl ex- ibility while simultaneously slashing our energy usage.” T e new installation allows Ash-

land Foundry to schedule and manage lighting to match shift work, downtime and holidays without needing to access fi xture-mounted switches. T e Digital Lumens System doubled light levels, improved safety by removing all glass and mercury, and reduced necessary mainte- nance during operation.
