Material: 356 aluminum. Process: Permanent mold.


Application: Heavy truck.


Casting Supplier: Stahl Specialty Company, Kingsville, Mo.


Dimensions: 16.85 x 19.69 x 18.7 in.


Casting Customer: Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill.


• Compared to the initial design for a cast iron component, the aluminum version reduced weight and costs by 17%.


• Stahl developed a special gravity per- manent molding process to produce a 107.5-lb. casting that could pass X-ray and leak testing.
