ROUNDS AMA house seeks ICD-10, MOC fixes

BY STEVE LEVINE Ways to soothe the pain of the new ICD-10 coding system and maintenance of certification (MOC) requirements — two sharp thorns in the sides of U.S. physicians — dominated the debate and action at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association House of Delegates. More than 100 Texas physicians, residents, medical students, and alliance

members representing the Texas Medical Association, various sections, and na- tional specialty societies participated in the June 6–10 meeting in Chicago. The Texas delegation left the meeting having elected both candidates it ran for AMA office and winning adoption of Texas policy statements.

MEDICINE GAINS ICD-10 GRACE PERIOD Delegates unanimously adopted the Texas-backed proposal to ask the fed- eral government to adopt a two-year, penalty-free grace period following the expected Oct. 1 implementation of ICD-10. “Our AMA will continue to prioritize our existing AMA policy that first seeks to stop the implemen- tation of the ICD-10 code set and, only if a delay is not feasible, seek mitiga- tion strategies,” the resolution stated.
