He chaired the TMA Board of


Trustees, on which he served since 2009. He also chaired the board’s Educational and Scholarship Loan Committee and the Board of Manag- ers of TMA PracticeEdge, and he is a past chair of TMA’s Patient-Physician Advocacy Committee. Dr. Read also served as president


of the Dallas County Medical Soci- ety (DCMS). While DCMS president, he and the medical society launched Project Access Dallas, a program that provided free health care to uninsured people in the community. Dr. Read created the West Nile Support Group in Dallas — he is a West Nile virus sur- vivor himself — and he volunteers his time helping and supporting patients diagnosed with the disease. Dr. Read received his bachelor’s


degree from Austin College in Sher- man and his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. While earning his medi- cal degree, he did a clerkship with the Presbyterian mission hospitals in Zaire. Following his internship at Northwestern University’s Passavant Hospital in Chicago, he entered the U.S. Navy and served with the First Marine Division in Vietnam, for which he received the Bronze Star. He returned to Chicago for train-


ing in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery at Northwestern Uni- versity and at Cook County Hospital. After completing his training, he was asked to become director of surgical education at Cook County Hospital and assistant professor of surgery at the University of Illinois. He is board certified in colon and


rectal surgery and general surgery, and practices at Texas Colon & Rectal Surgeons in Dallas. Dr. Read and his wife, Roberta, a


nurse, have been married for 45 years. They have two daughters and two grandsons. Dr. Read sings in the choir at Pres-


ton Hollow Presbyterian Church. He has been a member of the Downtown Dallas Rotary Club for 30 years.
