NATIONALLY and in Texas, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage among teens falls behind other recommended adolescent vaccinations and lingers below Healthy People 2020 targets of 80 percent coverage by 2020. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends vaccination begin at age 11 or 12.

HPV facts

In an unexposed population, the quadrivalent vaccine, which prevents four HPV types, was 100% effective in reducing the risk of HPV-related high-grade cervical, vulvar, and vaginal lesions and HPV- related genital warts.

Like all vaccines, the HPV vaccine is most effective if it is given before a person is exposed to the disease.

As of April 2014, about 67 million doses of HPV vaccine were distributed in the United States, and no safety concerns have been linked to HPV vaccination.
