AGRICULTURE TO PRINTING IN HOLGUÍN En route to your resort in the province of Holguín today, stop at La Finca las Y de Calzadilla, a working organic orchard in rural Las Tunas; explore the grounds, talk to workers about the crops they produce, and learn about agrarian life in today’s Cuba. Have lunch by a lake, and engage in a discussion with a local weaver who demonstrates how she crafts lovely hats and bags. In Holguín, meet members of the Gongora family at Casa Editora Cuadernos Papiro (Papyrus Papers Publishing House), their family-operated print shop and printing museum – the first of its kind in Cuba – where they use a collection of historic printing presses to produce a wide range of art books. You’ll interact with the family members, who have been involved in the printing industry their entire lives, as they discuss their printing processes and demonstrate their machines, which include early linotype and
other types of printing presses of the 19th and early 20th centuries, dating back as far as 1816. You’ll also have an opportunity to do a little printing of your own. Continue on this afternoon to your hotel on the Playa Esmeralda coast in Holguín, where you’ll enjoy a Royal Service Room and have dinner at your leisure this evening. Meals BLD
