A world apart 8 Leader: Tim Gillett Heading west
This month, the North American scholarly publishing community is descending on the glorious Canadian city of Vancouver for the SSP’s 38th Annual Meeting. To celebrate the event, Research Information has dedicated its first 12 pages to highlighting those things that unite – and differentiate – the academic publishing markets in Europe and North America. We look at different approaches to public policy in the two continents, peculiarities of the United States market, what makes up the American character, and – of course – a recognition that there are many things common to the two disparate markets.
Elsewhere in the magazine, the subject of discovery is very much to the fore. On page 14 Rebecca Pool interviews several key players on the brave world of discoverability, while two contributed analysis pieces also tackle the subject as well as the ways in which libraries could be affected by new trends. We also look at the latest technology in research communications, efforts to better link social media practices with academia, and the continuing drive towards open access.
Research Information will be in attendance at the SSP Vancouver show – as well as at the CILIP Conference, which will be held in the coastal city of Brighton, UK. We look forward to seeing you there!
