Discard Fear and Follow the Path to Peace

by Cassandra Curley T

he volatility of the Paris bombings continues to ignite fear while I’m posed to offer a “Path to Peace” that has been

my mission for the past several years. As I think about how fear is the source of confl ict, I am certain the concept of being free from fear is even more critical in achieving Peace. After all, “Be Fearless!” was the slogan that I wore, lived, and echoed every day along a 2500-mile walk for Peace that I completed in 2012. The core of the message that I share is that we are born peaceful and we learn to be otherwise. Whereas, our true nature is to connect with one another, we learn to judge, reject and condemn those who have different views. In doing so, we propagate our own insecurities about who we are and project them out as fear. Fear is merely uncertainty about who we are. Every one of the perpetrators of violence in the world has been

lured by ideologies that are based on fear—fear of losing possession of resources, fear of loss of power, fear of God, fear of death, or fear of being wrong about beliefs. And, the same fears that create confl ict in the world also generate confl ict and divisiveness in our homeland, causing further resistance toward progress and Peace. Whereas, fear creates confl ict, Peace is freedom from fear.

Peace is in knowing that we are united by a force greater than resources, power, and limiting beliefs—that we are part of that force. The path to Peace begins when we appeal to our need to connect with one another and caste aside fear for the benefi t of all. When I traveled the country, I saw abounding evidence of Nature’s connection, her synergy and her wisdom. That is why Nature is the perfect model for Peace and why I use her to demonstrate our potential. Nature does not covet, terrorize or create disparity; Nature is effi cient, balanced, adaptable, and consciously connected in a system that thrives; Nature is the embodiment of Peace. I also have often experienced the abundant generosity of the human soul. Along the walk, I received vociferous acts of kindness that constantly reinforced my belief in our capacity for Peace. If we simply listen to our natural impulses, we are far more capable of kindness than we are of succumbing to fear. To have been the frequent recipient of such goodwill has been truly inspiring and affi rming. Even though we may be horrifi ed by the atrocities that happen throughout the world, or detached and helpless when we glimpse them through the media, we can remember that there are billions more that have not been seduced by false doctrine and instilled with fear. When we experience humanity’s true nature, it restores our sense of capacity to Be the Peace that we are meant to be.
