THE GAP OF DREAMS COMPASS RECORDS The premier traditional Irish band, Altan came back to the hills of Donegal to record their new album, The Gap Of Dreams. The 13 tracks transport the listener to the lifestyle of rural Donegal, to a time before electricity when folks would gather together in the mists of winter to tell stories, sing songs and dance into the wee hours of the night. The music lifted the locals’ spirits and helped elevate them beyond the hardships of the day like famine, conflict, and emigration.

SENIOR MOMENTS ANGEL AIR The Ugly Guys release their third album via Angel Air. Paul Shuttleworth and Vic Collins were together originally in Kursaal Flyers (UK Top 20 hit ‘Little Does She Know’) and following the split of that band have been working together since 2003 with band members Steve Oliver (Jerry The Ferret), Andy Farrell (The Hamsters) and Bob Clouter (Legend). The Senior Moments album includes 12 new fantastic compositions which the band deliver with much gusto and bravado. Americana at its very best.


BLACKBEARD’S TEA PARTY


LEVIATHAN! (EP) BTP RECORDS On this record, Blackbeard’s Tea Party dramatise a whaling industry which once funnelled significant funds to British ports but would eventually bring many whale species to the brink of extinction. Across five tracks the band depict the industry’s promises of profit and glory, the power and might of whales, the adrenaline of the hunt, and the tragic bloody realities of a whaler’s life at sea.

STAYING BLUE ANGEL AIR Norman Baker is lead singer songwriter with The Reform Club who to date have released two albums. Staying Blue is his first solo effort and is an eclectic mix of blues, country, jazz and folk songs. The albums opening track is ‘Shipping Forecast’ with a wonderful blend of folk/ sea shanty whatever you call it, Norman can write a song and sing the heck out of it. This album showcases elite musicianship and really enjoyable songwriting.

YOUNG NIGHT THOUGHT TOUN RECORDS Named after a small Robert Louis Stevenson poem, Young Night Thought is a new album of original contemporary folk. In both Scots language and English, its sound is innovative, charged and exciting whilst resonating with narratives and images that have withstood the test of time. The writing for this album not only lends itself to Law’s rich vocal, but features special guest performances from multi award winning singer- songwriter Karine Polwart, Jarlath Henderson and Carla Easton (TeenCanteen).


PLANXTY


ONE NIGHT IN BREMEN MADE IN GERMANY Top-notch historical live-recordings from the Irish folk legends and it’s full of exciting, foot tapping music. Planxty’s concert was recorded live in Bremen,Germany in April 1979. It features the Chieftains’ Matt Malloy and the classic line-up of the band who started recording their critically acclaimed After The Break album two months later. One Night In Bremen is Planxty at its very best.

LACO UMBILICAL LUSAFRICA At last, in Lucibela, Cabo Verde has found a new singer brilliant enough to conquer the world with morna and coladera. When some Portuguese journalists compared her to Cesaria Evora, Lucibela declared: “Cesaria is unique and there’ll never be another Cesaria. My aim is to carry on the work Cesaria began. I want to sing Cabo Verdean musical genres – such as morna and coladera – pretty much anywhere in the world, and I want to succeed because of my own talent.”

ANGOLA 72 LUSAFRICA Lusafrica release two classic Bonga reissues, Angola 72 & 74, available separately on vinyl again. Very often included among the 50 must-have albums of modern African music, the two albums Angola 72 (with the inevitable ‘Mona Ki Ngi Xica’) and Angola 74 (with the first ever recorded version of ‘Sodade’) are finally re- edited on vinyl LP, with their original sleeves as published in 1972 and in 1974 on the Morabeza record label.
