WORLD MUSIC CHARTS EUROPE TOP 15

1. TRIO DA KALI & KRONOS QUARTET Ladilikan

1 Gerry Hallom Limited Edition (EP) (Gerry Hallom wbm 0002). Gerry was famed for his Australian-themed albums through the ’80s. Now, breaking a twenty-year silence, he’s back with a new four-track self-penned collection which embraces more universal themes drawn from contemporary life; he’s sympathetically backed by local (York) musi- cian friends. gerryhallom.com

1 Les Fils Canouche La Fasciculation (Absilone). Ivo Papasov meets Ti Jaz on speed. Add some tango and Hot Club Django style licks and you’ve got something good, but also slightly manic. Live is the best way to experi- ence them. Catch them on youtube. lesfilscanouche.com

1 Big Sadie Keep Me Waiting (Spindle Tree Records STR 201). Chicago-based acous- tic outfit, fronted by Elsie Bergman bass and vocals. No mandolin means no driving off- beat so the tempos are steady. Original mate- rial, but nothing really outstanding. Playing has room for improvement as have other lead singers. bigsadie.com

1 Vakia Stavrou, Alasia, (Accords Croisés, AC166). Cypriot chanteuse, much in the style of Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour, celebrates love and the Mediterranean in Greek, Por- tuguese and English. Beautifully sung and arranged, it is more cabaret than roots but worth checking out nevertheless. accords-croises.com

@ Bob Leslie Land And Sea (Big Red 3). Past member of many bands, Leslie has apparently “continually reinvented” himself. Following two fairly recent Americana albums, his transmogrification into a deep and resonant voiced “traditional Scottish” narrative singer-songwriter sounds desper- ately dated, even if some of the songs are OK. bobleslie.scot

1 Lulendo Mwina (Buda 5767421). Long term Angolan resident of France brings out his first album in over a decade. His remark- able voice and mbira are the best features of the album; the soft-rock accompaniments and production tend dull the impression they make. budamusiaque.com

2 Sam Brothers Farewell To My Old Days (White Mane Records). Debut album by a Canterbury songwriter whose flexible, expressive voice works perfectly in tandem with a lovely, clean picking style. Eleven origi- nals, plus a heartfelt cover of Phil Ochs’ There But For Fortune reveal a proper, old-school guitar troubadour.

1 Johanna Glaza Wind Sculptures (Johanna Glaza). Lithuanian-born singer and artist explores “grief and reconciliation” with piano, tape manipulations, atmospherics, beats and ukulele. Very much in the Kate Bush/ Joanna Newsom mould, but anyone who opens with a number entitled Space Mermaid is alright by me. johannaglaza.com

1 Bob Hillary Simplify (Bob Hillary) 5024545789720). Singer-songwriter, multi- instrumentalist and Mother Nature’s son. Bob and pals gently exhort the listener to “love yourself from within”, “embrace your animal power”, “breathe deep” and “see the sunrise in your heart”. Wide-eyed wonder meets blue-eyed reggae. bob hilary.com
