2 Various Artists Mississippi Juke Joint Blues (Rhythm & Blues RANDB036). Transport yourself to another time and place with this joyous and uplifting collection of blues, jazz and swing from the jukeboxes of Chicken Shack, the Dipsie Doodle, Lucky’s, the Mes- senger’s Café in Clarksdale, Mississippi, visited by Lewis Wade Jones, a Library Of Congress researcher, back in 1941.

@ Siama Rivers – From The Congo To The Mississippi (Rock Paper Scissors 7 98576 88832 9). Siama Matuzungidi has a great pedigree as a soukous guitarist and plays well here. However his midwest musicians seem to lack an understanding of the genre and the myriad of other influences picked up on his world travels sit uncomfortably together here.

1 Various Artists Classic Chicago Blues Live & Unreleased (Wolf 120.835). Recorded during Magic Slim & The Teardrops European tours between 1992 and 1996, these thirteen tracks feature The Teardrops (minus their leader) performing (presumably) before Magic Slim takes to the stage. The music has energy but no originality. Standard Chicago blues… not classic!

1 Corey Dennison Band Corey Dennison Band (Delmark 844). Solid blues and soul from guitarist/vocalist whose voice could chew up the furniture of any blues club. Den- nison spent eight years playing second guitar before getting his own band together and recording this first album, featuring original songs written by Dennison and guitarist/ organist Gerry Hundt. Good Enuff is good enough to become a blues standard.

2 Lewis & Leigh Ghost (Celticana CTNA 001). Hailing from Wales and Mississippi, Al Lewis and Alva Leigh are already a hit at Celtic Connections, Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival and the UK Americana Awards. Strong songwriting, effortless harmonies and radio-friendly production abound on this impressive debut album.

1 Wilful Missing Unsinkable Sailor (Lit- tle Attic WM005USCD). Highly-accomplished Bradford five-piece deliver thumping, Mum- fordesque anthems over heady cocktail of guitars, drums and keyboards with mandolin, bouzouki, flute, clarinet, accordeon, uilleann pipes and more. Thoughtful, social and eco- concious lyrics, with only the occasional ‘hey babe’ clunker.

2 Concerto Caledonia Nathaniel Gow’s Dance Band – Fiddle Music From Scottish Printed Sources 1761-1823 (Concerto Cale- donia CONCAL13). This is 18th/19th Century Scottish folk-baroque music performed on a semi-orchestral, cinematic scale by five fid- dles, viola, cello, pianoforte, recorder and small-pipes. It sounds like a Scottish sound- track to The Adventures of Barry Lyndon or Tous Les Matins Du Monde.
