SAW CREATIVE PATHWAYS BURSARY ARTISTS 2023

‘I will develop a body of work focussing on queer Somerset. It fosters community engagement and welcomes

perspectives on what the theme ‘environmental responsibility’ can mean, given that many different peoples, politics, and practices exist in relation to our shared Somerset environs.’

Joe Jukes

‘I am very excited about the next phase of my journey as an artist, which will be more experimental and will delve deeper

into my experiences and the ways they connect with others and the natural world.’

Kristen Lindop 30

Supported by SAW Artist Development Programme We are delighted to support artists Summer Auty (Venue 8, Black Swan Arts in Frome), Joe Jukes (Venue 17, Art Bank in Shepton Mallet), Sally Light aka Bodkin Beak (Venue 90, a studio in Wellington) and Kristen Lindop (Venue 155 at her studio in Bruton), to take part in Open Studios this year through SAW’s Creative Pathway Bursary Programme.

Each year, 4 artists in their early career stage are selected to receive bursaries, mentoring and peer-learning to develop their practice as part of SAW’s Artist Development Programme. This year, the artists have shared interest in environmental sustainability in their practice.

‘For an artist who hasn’t exhibited for years, I hope the bursary gives me confidence for my new creative practice. I am creating

textile works that draws on my experience of mending in a local woollen mill.’

Sally Light aka Bodkin Beak

‘I hope to work with a wider community across Somerset to explore relationships with the land and promote

protection of our green spaces. I want my work to foster feelings of belonging, inclusivity and to advocate a more equitable relationship with the land.’
