Rockin’ (all) around the world The Fast40+ class may soon be more than a European phenomenon

The Bakewell-White Yacht Design office have been working on their take on the Fast40+ class rule with a follow-on boat from the very successful 37ft Anarchy and General Lee designs. The Fast40+ class has been gaining significant interest in the southern hemisphere because a lot of people here still want fast, fun but interesting yachts that are nevertheless not too big or expensive to run and that can still be sailed well by skilled club-level sailors for local events. This style of

Left: Bakewell-White’s early Fast40+ concepts soon generated client interest locally – and from Korea. His previous 37-footer Anarchy (above) won every IRC event that it entered in 2016… a good start point

yacht has always been popular in New Zealand so it is no surprise that interest in the class has been shown down under. Following on from the pretty stellar first season of the Bakewell- White designed YD37 Anarchy, itself an evolution of the General Lee, there has now been enough interest to prompt our office to start work on a Kiwi-flavoured 40+. An experienced local owner has expressed ‘intent’ with further recent enquiries from Asia as well. With little concession to comfort this is a true grand prix iteration of the archetypal Kiwi yacht and intended as a serious contender within the class as well as in open IRC events. Construction is carbon-foam for the first boat with a Nomex option on offer for the future for IRC-focused boats not aimed at class

racing (Nomex is now prohibited for new Fast40+ builds). Within the New Zealand race scene there is always a need for a yacht to be able to multi-task so the first yacht will be made Cat 1 capable to make those offshore races to the Pacific islands a viable option, as well as the various Cat 3 coastal races through the season. However, the standard boat is firmly targeted at the Fast40+ rule with no speed concessions.

To be built in New Zealand, the yacht will be offered as a complete

sail-away package or for export there will be a hull/deck/foils option, with the owner able to then use his local rig and sail suppliers if preferred.
