News Around the World

was terrible. In 1993-94 Visiers’ third project failed after dismasting just 24 hours after the start… the yacht’s boom also breaking on the way back to England! However, compensation came in the new Whitbread 60 class where Javier de la Gándara’s Galicia 93 Pescanovatook third overall.

After two editions without an entry, Spain came back for the now

Volvo Ocean Race. In 2005/06 for the first time the start was not in the Solent but in Vigo, home of Pedro Campos. Since then Alicante took over the hosting from Vigo and remains the port of departure. With the race starting in Spain Pedro Campos has not missed the opportunity. In 2005/06 the Telefónica team debuted with Bouwe Bekking as its skipper, finishing in a discrete sixth place. In the 2008/09 edition Campos organised a campaign of two boats sponsored by Telefónica again. Bouwe Bekking finished third with Telefónica Azul, while Fernando Echávarri ranked sixth with Telefónica Negro. In 2011/12 Iker Martínez skippered the fourth Telefónica– Movistar– that ranked fourth, the same result as in the 2014/15 edition which saw Campos’s entry sailing in the new colours of insurance giant Mapfre.

So we get to the 2017/18 edition. For the new Mapfre project Campos made sure not to repeat the mistake of starting the campaign too late. The Mapfre VO65 is being delivered this month and they will begin training in Sanxenxo immediately. Time enough to be able to change what the regulations allow, and to test and select part of the team.

When the team’s participation was announced a skipper was not mentioned, but it has been an open secret that it would be Xabi Fernández. He was already co-skipper in the previous edition with his Olympic teammate Iker Martínez. However, Xabi was already under contract to Sir Ben Ainslie’s BAR America’s Cup team and this created certain problems that briefly delayed his confirmation as skipper.

Pablo Arrate also returns to Team Campos as watch captain after his previous campaign on Brunel. Arrate (36) was one of the two

under-30 crew on Telefónica Azuland again in 2011/12 on Movistar, but in the last edition Bouwe Bekking recruited him for Brunel. With three Volvo races behind him and a good reputation as a helmsman, Arrate will effectively be Xabi’s first-mate.

The other watch captain role seems likely to be shared between the two English sailors Rob Greenhalgh and Neal MacDonald – rotat- ing leg by leg. The team will also take advantage of Neal’s coaching experience. Antonio Cuevas, who made his debut with Pablo Arrate, has been part of the Campos team since 2005/06, and together with Willy Altadill will repeat their experience on the ‘new’ Mapfre. There was no early announcement regarding the possibility of including one or two women in the Spanish crew, something several potential entries are still discussing internally. But there are several obvious candidates… Spain’s Támara Echegoyen is already well known by Campos, being part of his Movistar/Mapfre-backed Olympic squad. The 49erFX Olympian was fourth in Rio after losing bronze in the medal race, in a series won on the final beat of the Olympic regatta by the Brazilian Martine Grael. It is being speculated that the young Brazilian will be the second candidate to begin an offshore career in an event won by her father, Torben, in 2009 with Ericsson… perhaps a way to continue the family tradition. And the rumours have foundations. Martina and Tamara are both great competitors, with similar Latin temperaments and no problems with the native language spoken by the core of the Mapfre team.

While the team is yet to be finalised, the goal is clear. This is the 13th edition of the most competitive crewed round-the-world race, an unlucky number in Spanish culture, but Campos’s team is determined to add Spain to the list of winning countries. Mexican Ramon Carlin’s Sayulaopened the list in 1974, followed by race winners from the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, France, Germany and Abu Dhabi… After so many years Campos desperately wants to bring a new name to a great offshore racing family.
