Champion Ton Cup and Superyacht designer Philippe Briand is entering the gently expanding WallyCento fleet with the sleek new P100


You can’t keep serious talent down… which is why the first three WallyCento 100-footers commissioned were drawn by two of the most successful raceboat studios of the modern era, Judel-Vrolijk (one boat) and Reichel-Pugh (two boats). A fourth WallyCento is also in the process of final development and, although almost every- thing about this project remains confidential, the designer is another well-recognised name from the raceboat field.


Briand has made a remarkably seamless transition from design- ing fast – and always elegant – racing designs to superyachts, with a vast array of production designs also flowing out of his studio. At heart, however, Briand is a racer, steering his own IOR designs to win both the 1983 Half Ton Cup (Freelance) and then the 1984 One Ton Cup (Passion 2); though not the first designer to attempt lighter, fractionally rigged offshore racers during the 1980s Briand was certainly among the most successful.


Not surprising therefore that from the outset Briand’s superyachts have been above-average performers on the racecourse while retaining those aesthetics – no floating apartment blocks here. Two of Briand’s earliest superyachts were Atlantic record holders: Mari-Cha IIIand IV, both fast and both good looking. These were followed by the giant 220ft Vertigo, the all-composite 108ft Inoui and two examples of a Perini 125-footer of which one, P2, has been among the most successful regatta superyachts to date. Now Briand is entering the WallyCento market with the P100, another good-looking and obviously performance-oriented design. The WallyCento class is steadily speeding up, the dual-purpose Hamilton IIsoon being outpaced by the lighter-built Magic Carpet– which in turn is now being followed by a Green Marine-built development also from Reichel-Pugh.


The first area that Briand addresses with the P100 is displacement; when completed his first WallyCento will be 2-tonnes

below the class upper limit and probably the lightest boat in the fleet. Briand has always been at the cutting edge of design tools and P100 will also benefit from a racing maxi-style CFD programme. Displacement is helped by P100 featuring lower freeboards than class rivals, as well as a novel deck profile that features (teak-clad) compound curves to deliver interior volume and deck height only where needed.


Hull shape is defined by a slimmer waterline beam than previous WallyCentos, improving performance in light air in particular and downwind in general. High stability is ensured by a large keel-bulb made possible by an aggressive approach to construction, with a comfortable interior constructed entirely out of carbon/Nomex panels and female-moulded single skin carbon components. Briand claims that much of the inspiration for the P100’s modernistic yet efficient interior came from some of today’s most stylish supercar manufacturers such as Pagani and Koenigsegg. The P100 trimming/helming cockpit is set right aft and is kept compact, with an extensive guest area forward set longitudinally within two smoothly curved teak-clad coamings. Briand’s P100 looks fast and there is every reason to expect her to sail fast. A worthy addition to a growing class.
