‘To win you have to finish’ is a well- worn expression that perfectly describes the challenge of a 75-day or more non-stop race around the planet where outside assistance of any sort is forbidden. For me the magic of the Vendée is the diverse fleet of contrasting projects, rang- ing from grand prix teams down to last- minute, low-budget campaigns with young guys doing their first race around the world. Then there are the skippers who are out there primarily to achieve a lifelong dream of sailing around the planet. The mix further engages a French public who can each choose a personal favourite to follow on their global adventure. Meanwhile, for the competitors, the race delivers a big fleet, interesting racing – with most skippers finding their own ‘group’ of boats of similar speed to race once the start gun is fired in early November.

We are already at the limit of 27 entries for this year’s race with several skippers on a waiting list; it will be interesting to see if the organisation will open up extra places if all of the declared entries can find their budgets in time.

The entry limit is decided rather simply: it is the maximum number of Imoca 60s that can fit into the port of Les Sables d’Olonne (with deck spreaders and foils, the parking plan is only getting more com- plicated). This number also corresponds with what the organisation sees as safe to manage during the race, while preventing media coverage of the boats and skippers from becoming too diluted.

This year it is my husband’s turn, but don’t be surprised to see me out there in November 2020. Like the Volvo, like the America’s Cup, the Vendée Globe is dangerously addictive.
