To be this good means leaving the baggage ashore. One of the rare occasions (left) when 49er sailors Pete Burling and Blair Tuke did not carry the number 1 during a World Cup regatta… But, panic not, by the end of last year’s Hyères event they were back to maintaining an extraordinary unbeaten record dating back to London 2012. This team, who after Rio return to Team New Zealand, personify all the virtues of ego-free knowledge absorption, uncluttered focus and the ability to enjoy their work that are highlighted by Rod Davis and then further explored by their coach Hamish Willcox on page 32
why you think that. Understanding the why of something is the key in going to the next level. It is also the key in understanding how to apply the lesson of one situation to another different, yet similar situation.
Why is a variation of ‘give a man corn and you feed him for a day, teach him to grow corn and you feed him for ever’. For example, if you say ‘we need to sail with more outhaul’, add ‘then the boat will have less helm and the bottom of the main will have less drag. End result: the VMG is better as we point a little lower but go much faster through the water.’
The next time the team is going high and slow, they will, hopefully, remember ‘outhaul’. 3) Individual buy-in, or belief. This season the gameplan is going to work to make us the best we can be. That comes from collectively identifying where we are, where we need to go, and how we are going to get there. Finally, making a logical plan that is both practical and do-able. Again, collectively, so everyone is on song. The coach’s job is to inject experience into all three of those things, and make sure we stay on track. Once the plan is made, I think part of my job is being the policeman – making sure we do what we agreed to, and on time.
There is a fourth factor in any season’s gameplan, but it’s so obvious that it goes without saying. The fun factor! It’s got to be an enjoyable experience for everyone. Without that, you’re doomed. It is that plain and simple. People enjoy hard work if they are having fun. The team must enjoy the journey.
An additional bonus to the 2016 gameplan is constant improve- ment – with each regatta, each day on the water, we should get better and better. That will bring a smile to the faces. If we do all of these things right we will have a successful season. No question about that.
As I have often said: ‘Success = 20% gameplan, 15% luck and 100% execution.’ That is, execution is everything! Bring it on!
