New Boats Table Intense
Another pair of stylish modern racer-cruisers join the ever-expanding family of fast 35-40 footers. Shorthanded, IRC or both, two boats that appear to have it all covered...
Pogo 36
The long-awaited replacement for the successful Pogo 10.50 was nominated for European Yacht of the Year before the first example went in the water (not sure what this says about the ‘awards’ industry). Regardless of paper plaudits, the combination of Finot-Conq’s proven track record in taking the best elements of open class race- boats and using them to turbo up their performance cruisers has resulted in another fast and exciting design that will certainly stand out from the acres of polyester plodders clogging up the world’s harbours. There is a new generation on the way of comfy mid-sized designs that sail really well, which are going to draw in an increasing number of race sailors looking for a dry night.
For its first few years the Class40 did a nice job of keeping this market fed, though the nights were not always dry. Now the Class40 and the performance-cruiser have diverged and moved on, but the same pairing of Finot-Conq and Structures Shipyard that was behind the original Pogo Class40 remains at the sharp end of the pack.
Elan GT5
More oriented towards IRC racing than the Pogo series, Rob Humphrey’s succession of Elan cruiser-racers have proved very hard to beat when they are well sailed. The same will no doubt be true of this good-looking new addition, which somehow combines a decent slice of big-boat looks, including twin-wheel steering plus a very clean deck layout, in a boat of just 40ft overall. The interior is pretty cool as well. Styled a little less dramatically than the Pogo 36, the new GT5 is perhaps easier on the eye for those still coming to terms with the fact that those wonderful old Rivals and Virtues are no longer state of the art in terms of aesthetics. Both the GT5 and Pogo 36 are carefully laid out to allow easy shorthanded sailing – and racing – though, while the Pogo cannot disguise its open class heritage, the latest Elan is a little softer visually and is likely to offer the more rounded performance profile. Two excellent examples of how this area of the industry has moved on in recent years.
