New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Everywhere you look

Tornado catamaran maestro Roland Gaebler has already secured the backing to build a fleet of what promise to be the fastest ever two-person production sailboats… and he’s also getting ready to launch a new international circuit on which to play with them

No sooner have we been introduced to the 9m SuperFoiler trimaran from Morrelli & Melvin (last month) than Tornado Olympic medallist Roland Gaebler is launching a slightly smaller two-hulled 7.62m design developed in partnership with German chemicals conglomerate Evonik – who are backing the project financially as well as supplying the advanced composite materials that will be used to build the boats.

While the SuperFoiler is being developed in California for a grand prix circuit in the Southern Hemisphere, Gaebler’s plans initially focus on Europe prior to the pursuit of more distant markets. But the truth is that both circuits can easily be adapted to demand, the boats themselves being so easily transported that either series could quickly be exported to any area of the world where there is strong interest. For Evonik the project offers the opportunity to showcase its refined composite materials in a new market and with a spectacular platform; for Gaebler this is a chance to use the lessons learnt by the early-starters in the field, the VX40, M32, AC45 and GC32, but to take the concept forward another stage with a design approach that starts with the foils and ends with the hulls, not the other way around. However, for Gaebler the success of this programme will hinge as much upon event planning as on the boats, although this new foiler cat promises to be faster for its size than anything before it. This is why, having watched the AC World Series struggle with breeze – too much or not enough – he has incorporated several rig options, with total sail areas ranging from 28 to 90m2

depending on the conditions on the day.

Much of the technical preparation for the new SpeedFoiler was carried out under the supervision of widely respected multihull and foil expert

With a light platform and two trapezes, it will be instructive to see how competitive the SpeedFoiler is against her larger foiling cousins. Foils are redefining all the ‘old rules’ of performance

Martin Fischer and so the science and delivery of the new boat should be faultless. Meanwhile, an aggressive sailplan of jib, mainsail and large A-sails should see two trapezing crew screaming for the Valium when the breeze is up – given the level of performance that Fischer is predicting. With the smallest rig allowing racing in 30kt+ of wind, we could also finally see a high-speed lightweight foiler become acquainted with Mr Big Chop… the results of which interface should prove illuminating. SpeedFoiler, SuperFoiler… the hull is so passé, n’est-ce pas?
