made famous by Luna Rossa as their training facility. Much like this event on Belle Mentethe series onboard Quantum Racingwas always tight, tight, tight. Funny how I always seem to be stepping from one bun fight to another.
Points of interest in the 52 racing: the competition is closer than ever and the fleet has made a big jump in performance and speed from 2015. The starting software is now incredibly accurate and it is truly a game of inches. Teams are using drone footage for debriefing which is a great perspective to watch pre-starts and figuring out your strategy vs the others. Onboard the Quantum Racingwe managed a six-point win over Andy Soriano’s Alegreand yet we did absolutely nothing fancy. Conservative mid-line starting, boat speed and continual fight were the recipe for success as we only managed one race win. Consistency in this event is king.
The interesting thought about the 72 and 52 classes is they are now both filling the void of development that is left by the America’s Cup. It is great to see the gear that comes out of Quantum Racing or Bella Mente or any of these teams and the positive effects it has on making the everyday sailor’s gear and sails better. Up next is the Bermuda Race on Bella Mente, TP52 in Porto Cervo and Farr 40 Europeans in Ancona, Italy. No rest for the weary and yet thankful for every day. Standing by in beautiful Newport, RI, carrying a little dust!
