DESIGN & Build Table in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Fire-breathing monster Carkeek Design Partners’ new 44-footer promises serious performance…

The C440 is our latest addition to our race series comprising the C40, C47, C52, C54, C60 and C72 and is the product of six months’ intensive design R&D using our latest tools in com- bination with ongoing data analysis from existing models. Logically positioned between the C40 mkii and C47, the C440 will satisfy those in search of a value-for-money platform on the smallest big boat to allow comfortable offshore as well as inshore racing. The C440 is our fifth-generation high-performance design focused on the IRC rule but with an equally effective winning ORCi/HPR package. Without compromising top-end speed, the forms and balance characteristics have been crafted to be forgiving and easily driven with owner-drivers in mind, and with the ability to be sailed offshore with reduced crew an important priority. In terms of performance the C440 will outperform most 50 (and even 60) footers downwind and maintain contact with larger boats upwind especially in light-medium conditions. We see this regularly from the C40s and recently the C47 in this year’s Rolex Middle Sea Race, keeping up with the TP52s, IRC 50s and Cookson 50s. To suit budgets, the C440 is offered in two editions:

 C440GPC Grand Prix Custom – Carbon epoxy unidirectional pre-preg/Nomex construction  C440GP Grand Prix – Carbon epoxy infused/foam construction

Another important goal of the C series is to deliver sensibly priced raceboats. Over the past four years we’ve invested considerable resources developing ways to reduce cost without compromising quality, detailing and performance. Lowering cost without com- promising standards, the infused entry-level model is designed with a unique assembly methodology – the complete structure being carbon female moulded using CNC technology. Benefits include reduced build time plus outstanding finishes inside and out. The size of the yacht was also carefully considered: 44-45ft is a transition point where system demands spike into highly

More and more pure race designs are once again appearing, Carkeek’s new C440 looking for all the world like an only slightly reduced TP52. Very, very tangy

loaded fittings and winch systems requiring twin pedestals – as seen on the C47. We therefore sized the C440 to keep gear size and associated costs under control with a choice of single pedestals connecting to single or double mainsheet winches. The C440 incorporates our very latest grand prix thinking. Par- ticular attention has been paid to developing a hull form that planes downwind easily and sustains high speeds even in light airs, but has enough stability to perform exceptionally upwind and support a large power-to-weight ratio in heavier conditions. Competitive lifespan is important and based on the current state of play, rule updates and rate of development and by constantly pushing design, engineering and construction we believe our designs will deliver winning results for much longer than previously. This is hard to predict accurately due to factors beyond our control, but the results of our current boats indicate a clear trend. Key characteristics of the C440 include a light displacement, high performance hull form; carbon rig and rigging; structurally compliant to ISO Cat A and ISAF Cat 1; twin topmast backstays with hydraulic deflectors; optional lifting cassette keel system; carbon tiller or twin wheel option; grand prix underdeck systems; configured to be competitive under IRC, ORCi and HPR.
