Commodore’s letter

ne of the first calls a new RORC Commodore receives is from Seahorseeditor Andrew Hurst, to fulfil the obligation to write this column… of which this is the first of as many as 36 possible contributions. Both the election and the privilege of writing in such distinguished literary company are huge honours. Thank you. My pact with your editor is to be allowed occasional space to give vent to my thoughts on subjects such as yacht names and the ‘she’ versus ‘it’ debate… However, the extent and intensity of RORC’s planned activities preclude such indulgence – at least on this occasion. Our annual prizegiving dinner at London’s Inter conti - nental Hotel was a lively affair to celebrate a lively season. We honoured winners from a number of countries and pre- sented our Seamanship Trophy to Ross Appleby and crew on Scarlet Oyster for their recovery from rudder loss during a rough Rolex Middle Sea Race. Our Somerset Memorial Yacht of The Year was Anthony O’Leary’s Antix, which had a superb season, not least her leadership in Ireland’s retrieval of the Commodores’ Cup last July. Warm congratulations to all our many multinational winners.

Marc Guillemot signed off on a successful relationship with his longterm sponsor Safran after the Route du Rhum, handing over the reigns to Figaro star Morgan Lagravière

Earlier in the month we also gave effect to the merger between RORC and the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Cowes. Much behind-the-scenes work has been taking place to bring both clubs together and to realise the anticipated benefits. Huge gratitude is due to all staff and committee members involved and especially to outgoing commodore Mike Greville who has led the complex process so ably. Integration offers many new opportunities for all members… two welcoming clubhouses and a strong mix of inshore and offshore sailing, now virtually year round. 2015 promises a juicy season – we celebrate our 90th anniversary among other matters and it will, of course, be another Rolex Fastnet year. We anticipate great interest, enhanced by competitors in the four-event Atlantic Ocean Racing Series. Members will also take part in the bicentennial celebrations of the Royal Yacht Squadron, while at the time of publica- tion I will personally be in Grenada for the pleasant duty of prizegiving for our new first Transatlantic Race and will be sending you, from that special island, warm thoughts for Christmas and 2015. Thank you to our now 4,000 members, our sponsors, our volunteers and our dedicated staff. We hope to see you all during our 90th anniver- sary season and to continue to provide safe, fair and fun sailing. One down, 35 to go!
