Under the new ownership of Thomas Duhen (above) one of Archambault’s first new launches was a heavily updated version of the original Joubert-Nivelt A35 IRC design. The first new A35R to be launched is seen here (left) on its way to a debut class victory at Spi-Ouest in 2014

boat in 1984, the Coco, Archambault is now launching a new-generation series Class Mini, the SKA 650 designed by the talented Sam Manuard, which will make its debut on the 2015 Mini circuit. ‘I am delighted to finally be working with Archambault on this exciting new project,’ says Manuard. ‘For me Archam- bault offers one of the most attractive building propositions in France. The com- pany has a great history of launching win- ning boats, designs that are on the whole both relatively simple but very effective. ‘The SKA 650 is a synthesis of my vari- ous recent experiments in both the 650 and Class40 fleets. The attractiveness of the 650 rule is its simplicity and the SKA 650 matches the Archambault philosophy

perfectly: simple and effective!

‘The deck layout and ergonomics are rather traditional with quite a deep cock- pit, while the rig is set well aft with a sailplan with an emphasis on running and reaching. There is also just one large upwind headsail carried onboard, which can be reduced with a reef instead of the usual alternative of switching between a Solent and genoa. This also allows us to carry one extra specialist downwind sail. ‘The hull is powerful with a focus on achieving a low planing speed threshold. Thanks to a precise build based upon infu- sion technology, and with an optimised composite structure, the overall weight remains low while still maintaining struc- tural stiffness. For a Series Mini the SKA 650

should prove particularly potent in light airs as well as in all conditions downwind.’ Sam Manuard actually began his career as a geophysicist, before making a success- ful debut in the Mini 650 class in 2000 when he designed and built his own 6.50 called Tip Top to enter the Mini Transat race. She lived up to her name in that first event and no fewer than 24 sisterships were eventually produced. Meanwhile, Manuard also continues to draw one-off 6.50s for some famous sailors. The most recent of his Proto Minis was no787 – The Financière de l’Echiquier – which finished second in the latest Mini Transat. In fact, the association between Archambault and Manuard appears such a natural fit that we wonder why it did not take place sooner…
