New Boats Table

The Shuttle 39 is a high-performance trimaran designed for offshore sailing and fast cruising. The first vessel is currently under construction in the Philippines for owner Andrew Fennell. The brief was to create a vessel that would provide an exhilarating sailing experience and would be fun to race, but also have enough accommodation to allow him to cruise with his family. Her 18.6m canting and rotating wing mast supports a total sail area of 190m2and the entire vessel is engineered for full carbon/foam
construction to achieve an exceptionally light weight for a boat of this size and type of just 2,200kg. The outrigger volume is close to 300% of total displacement, providing plenty of reserve buoyancy and allowing the underwater shapes to be optimised for flying the main hull efficiently and without fuss or drama. The design is influenced by recent developments on large offshore
racing trimarans such as the Ultim; high hull volumes keep the boat more level when powered up, while the forward deck profile is designed to shed water with minimum drag when the bow does pierce through a wave. The amas are also canted out so that the boat sails on the ideal vertical hull shape for high speed, while in very light airs only one outrigger skims the water, keeping wetted surface to a minimum. Careful consideration went into the rig size; the aim was to create
a boat that would have excellent light-air performance and be able to safely fly a hull upwind in medium conditions, but not become overpowered and too challenging to manage in heavy conditions. With proper systems and good sailing balance these boats are exceptionally rewarding to sail, so it was another priority that this boat be responsive

Inch by inch the discerning racer-cruiser is starting to appreciate the virtues of a really well-designed dual-purpose trimaran. With most previous examples of this type in the 50-60ft range this fine looking 39-footer should make a more widely accessible offering
to small inputs from the crew and reflect improvements in trim. The deck layout has been designed for shorthanded sailing while
the beam configuration maximises interior accommodation with a comfortable double cabin aft, galley, nav station and saloon, twin berths midships and a cosy double berth in the forepeak. At just under 12m the Shuttle 39 is exempt from some of the more
stringent offshore sailing regulations. There is a demountable option to allow shipment inside two standard 40ft shipping containers, although Andrew Fennell has not opted for this; once assembled the two versions will look identical. The demounting system chosen is the same as we used successfully on our earlier 30ft trimaran Naia. Orion Shuttleworth, Gurnard, Isle of Wight
