HOLSTEIN UK

Giving an update on the happenings this month at Scotsbridge House is acting general manager, Charlotte Rose

am pleased to share with members that fi gures for quarter three are pleasing and for the fi rst time in a good few years Holstein UK is in profi t for quarter three. This will stand Holstein UK in good stead for the year ahead which is forecast to be tough, largely due to milk prices. Registrations in particular had the best year in 10 years in 2014 and this is an encouraging achievement, particularly with the dismaying trend of what is happening in the dairy farming sector.

I

AT THE HEART OF SUSAN BOUGHTON

How long have you worked for Holstein UK and what positions have you held within the company? I have worked for Holstein UK for 23 years, starting as

an administration assistant when there were three admin departments. I have since worked my way up to manager and there is now just one department called membership services.

What’s your job title and what does your role involve? My job title is membership services manager and I run the membership services team, dealing with membership, registrations and grade ups, DNA and genomic testing, processing ET forms and ear tag orders, LP, SP and star brood cow awards, as well as foreign registrations.

Holstein UK, in the three months to December 2014, has shown a dramatic improvement in its core turnover of

7% and an overall increase in turnover of nearly 10% in the nine months to December 2014. The cost cutting initiatives throughout the year came to the fore in quarter three, with costs reduced by more than 15% compared to the equivalent quarter of 2013/14. Having spent the fi rst half of the fi nancial year establishing, and working to,

the new regime the company is now seeing the results. Having just presented the April to December 2015 business plan to the trustees on the 25th

the key focus for 2015 is around Sharing Knowledge with members and industry. Making life easier for members and really getting to grips with how Holstein UK can support them is the key driver in 2015. During these more testing times Holstein UK is doing everything possible to support its members and this resulted in the board taking the decision to stop the charging of late fi nes for the time being. Another effi ciency saving available to members is the Complete Service which offers considerable savings by streamlining milk management, movement, registration, fertility, ancestry and type classifi cation. The company also confi rmed that it would not increase its prices from April 2015 in light of the current situation. Every single marketing campaign and investment being made in 2015 will directly impact members, now split in to four demographics to ensure Holstein UK is delivering for all, in a positive manner.

I am pleased to update the membership that Scotsbridge House is going up for sale on a subject to planning basis. The portfolio price signifi cantly increases on this basis and, therefore, it is the right thing to do for the membership as well as falling in line with charity requirements.
