STAFFORDSHIRE

Staffordshire’s summer herd competition took place over three days from the 6th to 8th July, with 18 entrants including one new competitor. Judge David Hodgson from Wormanby was stewarded by Paul Fenton, John Lomax and Chris Howe. Thanks to Edith Dutton, Paul Fenton and Mary Marshall for providing refreshments during the day and stewards and competitors entertaining David for the two evenings while staying in Staffordshire. The Club met again in late August at the Yarlet Greyhound, Stafford for our presentation evening, where 36 members enjoyed a first class meal. Following the meal Dave gave an account of his three days in Staffordshire, emphasising the high standard of all the competitor’s herds, including those not in the first three. Classes were well supported with 13 entries in one class and for the first time a class for Red cows attracted eight entries. David presented cups and certificates including the champion herd going to the Marshall family’s Overseal herd, with runner up being the

Hydaways herd owned by the Hill family.

The summer herd visit took the Club to visit the Tixall herd of Jerseys in August, this did raise a few eyebrows, but having seen the Tixall herd winning interbreed awards at County and local shows the committee thought this would be a good idea.

Nearly 70 members and friends viewed the herd including some from Shropshire Holstein Club and North Midland Jersey Club. Many thanks to the Wright Family for an enjoyable visit, the evening concluded with a great supper before leaving in darkness.

Although results of the various competitions will have been detailed in an earlier, and this, issue of the Journal, we still feel it necessary to acknowledge the tremendous efforts and success of our young members this summer. Special thanks to Karen Sutton, Elizabeth Custer and Lucy Hill for leading the team with great enthusiasm, culminating in an excellent third in the stand competition at the All Britain Calf Show. Congratulations to everyone.

SOUTH AND WILTSHIRE T

he Club held their annual Quiz Night on the 27th October at

The Averbury Club. Organised by Catherine Elmes, five teams took part in an enjoyable and fun evening with a variety of questions. Overall winners were a combined Jersey and Holstein team captained by Zoe Clear. An excellent buffet was provided by Caroline Huins and the Club would like to thank everyone who attended, particularly those who travelled from further afield to make the evening such a success.
