THE DAIRY SHOW

A select, but high quality entry were forward for judge Kevin Wilson of the Warnelview herd at this year’s Dairy Show, Shepton Mallet, with Mr Wilson praising the quality of the entries in every class. “There were some great cows forward and my overall champion is an exceptional cow with everything I am looking for in a cow.” Taking the supreme championship honours and later the reserve intebreed championship were the Davies family, Ilminster, Somerset, with their intermediate cow class winner Davlea Goldwyn Pledge 2, with Max Davies at the halter. This third calved Braedale Goldwyn daughter calved in May and was shown giving 45kg a day. She is out of Ridgefield Pledge and was reserve champion at last year’s Dairy Show having previously been interbreed heifer champion at both the Dairy Show and Royal Welsh in 2013.

Having given 9151kg as a heifer at 4.18%bf and 3.24%p Pledge 2 gave 10,585kg as a second calver at 4.31%bf and 3.15%p having classified VG89 as a two year old.

Kevin Wilson said she was a stand out cow. “She’s a tremendously well balanced young cow with a great rear udder and superb locomotion. “She’s a cow I admire an awful lot, with real dairy strength and an excellent rump and legs and feet. Her udder is tight and high, she’s a true modern type of cow and is one I’d love to have at home,” he added. Elwyn and Cheryl Thomas

enjoyed a tremendous day in the ring, collecting both the breed and interbreed heifer titles, as well as the reserve breed championship and honourable mention titles. Taking the interbreed heifer title and also the honourable mention in the breed

championship was the couple’s February 2013-born Noremead Baxter Kansas.

This privately purchased Emerald-ACR-SA T-Baxter daughter is out of the EX92 classified dam Noremead Monarch Kansas and was shown giving 35kg a day having calved in May.

Previously shown locally, she was breed champion and overall champion of champions at Llandyfaelog Show for the Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire- based couple.

Interbreed heifer judge James

Warren said the heifer was the most complete on the day, showing excellent balance and dairyness combined with a great rear udder. “She tracked so smoothly and had that extra show quality I was looking for.” She is one of 170 milkers run by the Thomas family and has been served again to Gegania Doorman Fry.

Picking up the reserve breed championship was her herd mate Gatrog Sarge Lavender, a daughter of Riverdane Sarge out of Gatrog Geno Lavender classified EX93.

This fourth calver was shown giving 48kg a day having calved in May and gave 10,138kg in her third lactation at 4.31%bf and 3.55%p, having given 10,081 in her second lactation

and 8554kg as a heifer. She was champion of

champions in South Wales in 2014 and 2015, with Mr Wilson describing her as a similar type to his breed champion. “She’s a touch cleaner in the bone than the champion, but has an excellent udder with four well placed teats.

“As with the champion she tracks well and I admire her for her outstanding dairy strength.” Commenting on his honourable mention choice he added this heifer was sweet boned, with a great openness of rib and full, high udder.

Winning the dry cow class was Gatrog Montague Culture, again from Elwyn and Cheryl Thomas, with this one being a June 2009-born Ladys Manor Montague daughter which is classified EX92. She gave 13,354 in her third lactation at 3.8%bf and 3.15%p.

Then in the in-calf heifers the winner was Matthew Limond’s Linlake Destry Lavender, an October 2013-born Scientific Destry daughter.

The senior heifer class was won by Chedhunt Holsteins with their December 2012-born Treetop Alection Vanessa, a VG87 classified Riverdane Alection daughter which calved her first in May. Bred by Lucinda Nottage she was purchased at Sedgemoor. Winning the junior cow class was Peachy Ava Tyrol from Peachy Holsteins, with this being a Farnear TBR Altaavalon daughter. Classified VG88, this second calver gave 10,539kg as a heifer at 3.89%bf and 3.17%p and calved her second in April.
