“For decades construction workers have suspected state surveillance of their lawful and legitimate trade union activities. Just as activists believed the industry ran a blacklist, denying them work. Major contractors were caught red handed in their furtive blacklisting of trade union activists, work undertaken on their behalf


by the now infamous Consulting Association,” she said.


“The contractors were brought to trial and forced to pay compensation and Unite is in the forefront of the campaign to expose and end blacklisting industrially and politically while at the same time deploying a highly effective legal strategy. Unite has core participation status in the Pitchford Inquiry and we support COPS nationally and are appealing to branches to affiliate to the campaign.”


However Gail added the Pitchford Inquiry alone is not enough to shine a light on blacklisting.


She said, “Now it is also proven that secret police did target a construction union, placing an undercover police spy within the ranks of activists. Unite believes a full and public inquiry should also be held into blacklisting as the only means to fully disclose the scale and depth of this abomination that we believe persists across the industry.”
