sda and Walmart have published their second quarter earnings covering the period
from 1 April to 30 June 2020. The trading quarter, which began the week after lockdown was imposed across the UK on 23 March, saw Asda’s like-for-like sales excluding fuel, increase by 3.8% year-on-year. The supermarket also delivered record online sales in the quarter – seeing its online grocery sales double and click and collect sales quadruple during Q2, with transactional data showing that many of these customers were new to Asda. To meet the growing demand, Asda
has increased its online capacity by 65% since March to 700,000 weekly slots and provided 1.4 million free of charge slots for clinically vulnerable customers.
6 September 2020 Recognising the increased and
sustained appetite for online grocery shopping, Asda plans to increase its online capacity to 740,000 slots per week by the end of the year – and has set its sights on increasing capacity further still with to up to one million slots made available in 2021. The supermarket is also expanding its delivery partnership trial with Uber Eats to 25 more stores over the next eight weeks and has reinstated its same day and express click and collect service at more than 300 stores. This service was paused at the height of the pandemic to reduce pressure on stores. Looking ahead to the second half of the year, finances remain a key concern for consumers as the economic consequences of the pandemic become more apparent. In a recent survey, almost half of Asda customers said they expect their household incomes to decline during the next 12 months, whilst the latest Asda Income Tracker showed that family spending power decreased by 2.2% in the year to June to £211 per week – the steepest fall in seven years. But as well as increasing concerns
around their finances, customers are also recognising positive changes resulting from the pandemic. Almost 40% of Asda customers said they have cooked or baked from scratch since the lockdown was introduced and
16% said they will continue to do so as restrictions ease. The cost savings and health benefits of spending more time cooking at home has resulted in a quarter of Asda customers saying they will improve their diets and eat healthily post-Covid.
T
housands of households will now have the option to have Waitrose food and drink delivered to them
in as little as 30 minutes for the first time after announcing a new delivery relationship with Deliveroo. The trial will be initially for 12 weeks, giving over half a million households the opportunity to have Waitrose food delivered direct to them. If successful, they expect to extend the trial into more locations before looking at further opportunities to roll out on a larger scale.
More than 500 Waitrose products will be available for Deliveroo customers to choose from, including ready meals, fruit, vegetables, meat, milk, snacks, store cupboard and cleaning essentials, as well as beer and wine. Customers will be able to place orders from one hour after the shop opens through to one hour before the shop closes.
The trial with Deliveroo will start
on 1 September from the Waitrose shops in Bracknell and Clifton, before launching in its Surbiton, Fitzroy Street (Cambridge) and Notting Hill shops from 3 September. It is designed to complement the supermarket’s two-hour home delivery service, Waitrose Rapid, which now has over 23,000 customers, a three-fold increase compared to pre-Covid. James Bailey, executive director for Waitrose, said: “We have laid down a
marker for our future strategy with the growth of
Waitrose.com and Waitrose Rapid and this gives us another opportunity to give our customers a taste of what the future of convenience shopping could look like for us. Our trial with Deliveroo has huge potential to give new and existing customers greater choice and flexibility for when and how they want to shop with Waitrose.”

idl GB has opened its 100th store in London in Beckton, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the same low prices in all locations across London as it does nationwide, taking on the established supermarket convenience offering. The discounter has also revealed plans to open 30 new stores in the capital by the end of 2023 creating around 1,400 jobs, helping to meet demand in London locations that do not have access to Lidl’s discount offering. Lidl’s strategy for London involves
being increasingly flexible on the type of sites needed for new stores, whether that be on the high street, retail parks, shopping centres or mixed-use sites. Lidl’s new store in Richmond –
currently under construction - will have a school located above it, providing Deer Park primary school with a permanent home after they spent nearly two years searching for a suitable site.
