Barkell delivers bespoke AHU solution in Canary Wharf

N 1990s.

It is situated to the south west of the main tower and Canary Wharf Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station.

As part of a major refurbishment programme, m&e contractor Bancroft was selected for the execution of the project, along with Aecom Consulting Engineers which was involved from the design phase through to practical completion and handover.

Barkell was selected for the supply of replacement air handling units (AHUs). The business manufactured and supplied

five bespoke AHUs, providing evaporative humidification, with site leakage testing to DW 143 standards and casing constructed to BS EN1886 T2 thermal transmittance and TB2 thermal bridging standards. As this was a refurbishment of an older building, there were tight spatial restrictions and access routes, which made it challenging to comply with Building Regulations Part L and the ErP (Energy-related Products Directive 2009/125/EC). To overcome this issue and to ensure compliance, Barkell designed and supplied the compliant AHUs in flat-pack form. To ascertain performance to precise specifications, the AHUs were built onsite by Barkell engineers.

Steve Lockwood, principal engineer from Aecom Consulting Engineers, commented: “The main issues on this project were fitting the AHUs in tight areas and late change requirements.

“However, Barkell overcame these by putting forward multiple configuration options during the design phase, and adapting to updated requirements.

“With limited access routes to the created plant rooms, Barkell’s ability to construct on site was also very important on this project. “Overall, we were very impressed with the build quality, and all units commissioned have had no issues in terms of meeting design performance.”
