TRAINING
A sustainable solution The transition to natural and fl ammable refrigerants
is a cornerstone of global eff orts to mitigate climate change. Refrigerants such as R290 and CO2
off er
low-GWP alternatives signifi cantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, their adoption requires specialised training to address the inherent challenges of handling fl ammable substances safely. Programs like those organised by Centro Studi Galileo, in collaboration with UNEP and UNIDO, are essential in equipping technicians with the skills needed for this transition. Practical safety measures and an understanding of regulatory frameworks ensure these refrigerants can be integrated into HVAC/R systems without compromising safety.
Bridging the gender gap
HVAC/R in Africa: regional Insights Africa is poised to play a signifi cant role in the global
HVAC/R industry. The Union of African Associations of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (U-3ARC) has been instrumental in driving progress across the continent. During its 4th General Assembly in Tunis in November 2024, U-3ARC reaffi rmed its commitment to promoting sustainable practices and elevating industry standards.
Under the leadership of President Madi Sakandé and Vice-President Said El Harch, U-3ARC has prioritised training and capacity building. Partnerships with organisations like Centro Studi Galileo have been pivotal in introducing sustainable refrigerants and advanced technologies. These collaborations underscore the importance of regional and international cooperation in addressing climate challenges.
The Importance of Certifi cation Certifi cation is more than a formality; it is a
critical tool for ensuring quality, safety, and global compliance in HVAC/R operations. Certifi cation provides a gateway to international standards for technicians in developing countries, equipping them to handle the complexities of modern refrigerants. Programs like REAL Alternatives bridge knowledge gaps, enabling professionals to work confi dently with fl ammable and low-GWP refrigerants. In Africa, where the refrigeration and air conditioning industry is expanding rapidly, certifi cation ensures that a growing workforce can operate safely and sustainably. By standardising skills, certifi cation enhances mobility, allowing technicians to work across borders and fostering regional cooperation and economic growth.

Inclusivity is another critical dimension of advancing the HVAC/R sector. Initiatives like the Women in Cooling Video Competition, organised by AREA and World Refrigeration Day, aim to spotlight the contributions of women professionals. These eff orts encourage gender diversity, ensuring the industry’s growth is equitable and innovative. The contest is open to women associated with
organisations that are members of AREA or employed by companies represented by these associations. Participants are invited to create a video, with a maximum length of 10 minutes, documenting their profi ciency in one of the key technical aspects of the RACHP sector: The two fi rst-prize winners will be hosted at the 21st European Conference organised by UNEP- IIR-AREA-CSG (Milan, June 12 and 13, 2025). AREA, through ATF, will cover the travel and accommodation expenses. The winners will be announced on May 23 during AREA’s General Assembly in Istanbul.
