ELI LILLY INVESTS €35M IN KINSALE FACILITY

Global healthcare business Eli Lilly is to establish a manufacturing facility in Kinsale as part of a €35m (£28.3m) investment. The operation will be used to create a ‘new wave’ of active pharmaceutical ingredients. This project will apply continuous

manufacturing technology to carry out the development and commercialisation of a number of Lilly's small molecule pipeline products that are currently undergoing late-stage clinical trials. The facility is set to be fully operational by early 2017. "Pharma is a key sector which we

have targeted as part of our jobs plan and winning investments from major world-leading companies like Lilly brings enormous benefits to Ireland,” says minister for jobs, enterprise and innovation Richard Bruton who has met senior Lilly executives in at its US headquarters on several occasions. "Not only are the direct jobs of

huge importance to a town like Kinsale but the heavy investments made by major pharma companies like this create massive knock-on impact on the local economy in the form of extra employment in supply

and service companies." Dr John C Lechleiter, chairman,

president and chief executive of Eli Lilly and Company explains: "Since our Kinsale site was established 35 years ago it has contributed significantly to the success of our company and developed a strong reputation for delivery. This investment follows a major biotech investment program at Kinsale over the past eight years which so far has resulted in an investment of €650m and the recruitment of 350 additional employees at the site." www.lilly.ie/en

4 SUMMER 2016 | IRISH MANUFACTURING

An Antrim-based manufacturing company has doubled the size of its workforce on the back of a significant upturn in demand from the construction sector. Family-run SAM Mouldings which has set its sights on further growth has been hailed by the chief executive of Manufacturing NI for its continued success. Over the past three years the

company has increased staff numbers from 90 to 180 and plans to post a 100% rise in turnover over the next five years. "It has been an exciting time.and

we are keen to build on this momentum and looking ahead to the next five years with a focused and goal orientated strategy in place,” says managing director Richard Holmes. "I am immensely proud of our

development opportunities that will help our staff to achieve their career goals. I think it speaks volumes that almost 30% of them have been with the company for 10 years or more." SAM has implemented several changes to achieve its targets including introducing a new marketing department, launching a new website and moving to seven

days a week production. In addition, the company has recently introduced a new product development department to allow it to react to the growing opportunities within the construction sector. "Despite some difficult

manufacturing news in County Antrim in recent months the growth of SAM is evidence of the continued success of the local manufacturing sector,” comments chief executive of Manufacturing Northern Ireland Stephen Kelly. "We have great people making

great products enjoyed in markets both at home and abroad. Companies such as SAM prove that we can take on and beat international competition. “Its success is built on a settled

and skilled workforce, understanding their market needs and quality leadership. Its investment in people, product and market development has led to this huge growth and will lead to future, long term success." www.sammouldings.co.uk
