Letters to the editor Support the brands that support you, writes T C Hayes managing director Tom Hayes
F
ollowing the recent Sirius conference in Ibiza I feel compelled to write to you. What I am acutely aware of is the difficulties the independent sector of our industry is experiencing trading on the High Street, especially in the brown goods sector. Sadly, this has led to demise of many. When you look how some of our brown goods suppliers have behaved, not all is fair. Many of us have spent a lifetime supporting them, we made them household names and look how some have treated us. Cheaper to buy products from our big competitors than directly from them, it is as though they wanted to shut us down. They seem to be on a different planet to our white goods suppliers. What has motivated me to write to you was the generosity and support shown to us by our white goods suppliers. This support was clearly demonstrated at our conference. Their generous funding of the whole event in luxury surroundings
was exemplary. Times are difficult for all, and yet they pulled out all the stops. Not just the funding of the whole event but also their donations for charity, which helped to raise money for many worthy causes. Their support is truly appreciated, certainly by me, and I have no doubt by many of my independent colleagues. They will certainly have my support for the coming year, and I would encourage my fellow independents to do likewise. They certainly deserve it. Yours sincerely, Tom
