Skewed perceptions – such as believing engineering and technology are just for boys – are preventing young women from considering a career in engineering and contributing to the widening skills gap. To help address the issue, engineering solutions company adi Group has launched what it claims is the UK’s first pre-apprenticeship scheme for 14-16 year olds. Run in partnership with a local secondary school, the scheme involves adi engineers teaching core practical skills to 12 pupils (including three girls) in a live workshop for half a day each week. By introducing young women to the world
of engineering at an early age, it is hoped that more of them will choose to enter a career in the industry after they’ve completed their studies, the Group explains.

said: “Despite recent figures showing more people are entering apprenticeship schemes than ever before, for every female apprentice working within the UK engineering sector there are 25 male apprentices. “With apprenticeships being the main route
into engineering roles it is hardly surprising that the UK has the lowest proportion of female engineering professionals.” Lusty goes on to add: “A key part of the
solution lies in providing engineering training for young women before they make important career decisions. “Our new pre-apprenticeship scheme links together industry and education to show school age children the benefits of engineering and present it as a viable career option.

EMF MACHINERY SAFETY SERVICE FOR MANUFACTURERS AND END USERS
TÜV SÜD Product Service has launched an EMF machinery safety service, which will help both machinery manufacturers and end-users ensure that they comply with the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations. The new service will include EMF
measurements and risk assessments of the machinery environment, to ensure compliance against a wide
range of legislation and standards – including CE marking, the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). Neil Dyson, business line
manager for machinery safety at TÜV SÜD Product Service, said: “The regulations state that a dedicated person undertakes a workplace assessment, who
must be fully trained in order to deliver against compliance requirements. TÜV SÜD’s new service solves this issue and minimises costs, as our innate expertise means that we can efficiently and effectively measure EMF levels to fully assess the risk represented by a machine, or assembly of machines, in the workplace.”

DAWSON SHANAHAN OPENS DEDICATED APPRENTICE TRAINING SCHOOL AT ITS FACILITY
The Sensors & Instrumentation exhibition, which took place at the end of September, has once again been hailed a success by visitors and exhibitors. Visitors were impressed by
the variety of products on display and the interesting seminars that took place; and exhibitors are already booking stands for the 2017 show. In fact exhibitor comments
included: “We have never been asked for so many quotes at an exhibition. We’ll definitely be back next year!”; and “It’s been a really good event, with a number of new customers and contacts coming our way”. Next year the event will take
place on 26-27th September. Rachael Morling - Editor
Dawson Shanahan has opened a dedicated apprentice training school at its Welshpool-based engineering facility. The company works closely with colleges in the local area to provide apprentices with the training and skills they need to pursue a career in the engineering sector. Working alongside experienced engineers, the apprentices will work
on real projects, lead by senior engineer Ken Toop, who was responsible for the development of the training school. They will have access to a dedicated classroom to learn about the theoretical side of engineering, and different types of machinery will be featured. Here, the apprentices can put theory into practice and hone their skills in a range of areas. At present, the company has five apprentices in training for various
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), but there is capacity for more.

A gearbox ready service has been launched by Renold Gears to provide manufacturers with a rapid replacement unit in the event of a failure or urgent repair. To provide the new service Renold
Gears will design and manufacture an identical replacement gearbox for any unit, regardless of the original manufacturer, free-of-charge, and hold it in stock until it is required. In the event of a failure the
replacement unit is dispatched immediately and can often arrive on site within a matter of hours. The old unit is then replaced with the new one and is returned to Renold’s factory where it is properly refurbished to an as-good-as-new condition. It is then kept in stock until it too is required and the service cycle repeats.

Exico has added two new calculation tools to its website that enable users to work out the relationship between torque, power and speed in electric motor applications. By entering the three main parameters of motor power, speed and derating percentage, users can plot the torque/speed model of either force ventilated or self-ventilated, squirrel cage induction motors controlled with a frequency inverter. To make the tool even more
accessible and easy to use, there are no login requirements and the web page does not ask for any user details.
