In the largest single investment in its history, Rittal is expanding its production capabilities and building what it claims is the world’s most advanced production plant for compact enclosures. Total capital expenditure for the facility in Haiger, Germany, will amount to 250 million euros. It is due for completion in 2018. At 24,000 m², this will manufacture 9,000 enclosures a day from 300 standard types, in accordance with customer needs. Digital technology will play a key role, as will machining and assembly tools from Rittal Automation Systems’ portfolio. Materials will be transported across the plant by means of automated guided vehicles (AGVs); and Intelligent systems, with machine-learning abilities, will be deployed to continuously increase system availability and to predictively order spare parts. Furthermore, fully automated control systems, for example in the paint


shop, will minimise energy consumption, costs and environmental impact. Haiger will act as a pilot and model for upgrades at other Rittal sites throughout the world. Digitisation of production processes is vital to delivering future improved efficiencies – It is key to achieving the productivity needed to compete in the global marketplace and to create a secure platform for the workforce in all the locations where Rittal operates. Rittal has also invested over 40 million euros in a state-of-the-art


distribution centre. From here, up to 80 trucks per day will ship around 10,000 products to customers around the world. www.rittal.co.uk


IMECHE COMPLETES NEW INVESTMENT


The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has completed a new investment, through its £2m Stephenson Fund, into Proxisense. This is a spin-out from Oxford University’s engineering department, developing proximity sensors and fluid contamination systems for use in extreme environments. These are used to monitor the health of turbine blades and lubrication fluids in, for example, jet engines; and can extend component lifetimes, increase efficiency and reduce maintenance and downtime costs. Stephen Tetlow MBE, chief


executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “The technology Proxisense is developing has the potential to cut maintenance and downtime costs of aircraft and other vehicles significantly. Making the manufacture and maintenance


more efficient and low-cost. “It is exciting that we are in a

Known as the Architecture Development Division California, this is an organisation that is dedicated to the development of architecture for the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
