identity credentials in access control. Access control is defined as ‘the
selective restriction of access to a place or other resource’. For an automatic access control system to function, it requires a means of identifying individuals to determine their access rights. Since the early days when access was
granted when a PIN was entered, access control systems have evolved to support many forms of ’physical’ credentials. Generally referred to as ‘pass cards; these credentials have taken many forms, but, without the card, an authorised person would not be able to gain access to restricted areas. Recent technological advances have made the need to carry identity cards unnecessary.
New ways of controlling access
Two completely different approaches have been used – biometric readers (using unique human characteristics for identification) and virtual credentials (a unique identity code that can be securely sent from a cloudbased server to an app on the user’s smartphone). Where might credentials go next? In the short to medium term, identify
cards will continue to be used, with contactless smartcards gradually replacing older technology proximity cards. Virtual credentials on mobile devices will become far more widespread. The everincreasing levels of security being required will most likely lead to a wider use of facial recognition as the main biometric credential. For the full article please go to

Wyastone requested an update to more modern Web Enabled solution thus facilitating a revised support solution. Working with the Cardiff branch of BCM, a demonstration of the new DDC4020e controller was made and was accepted by the foundation. With planned gaps in concert hall bookings the exchange with some feature upgrades was made within 16 hours, the system was online and monitoring the plant as expected. The environment controlling within tolerances with some simple user interface tuning was verified a week later with remote access with the client watching and asking questions as needed. The controls are very easy to use and have tremendous flexibility for tailoring to the customer needs. They are secure, small and compact making them ideal for upgrades of older BMS systems.
