Antler Air Systems’ remit is to monitor the energy performance of each store and to identify where it is practical to reduce energy use to keep costs to a minimum for its client. “We have an open remit to identify sources of energy saving and improve the longevity of HVAC equipment while maintaining a safe and comfortable working environment,” says David Smith, technical director.

For each store, regardless of whether it is a new or an existing store undergoing a major refurbishment, Antler Air Systems designs and installs a bespoke, fully integrated Building Energy Management System (BEMS). The BEMS incorporates Carlo Gavazzi’s EM210 three-phase energy analysers or EM271 Quick-fit split load energy analyser, depending on the application. “We use these meters for their extensive range of functions, cost, simplicity of use and reliability,” says Smith.

with the heating ventilation and air- conditioning systems. “The energy meters we use from Carlo Gavazzi allow us to monitor up to six single phase outputs,” Smith says. “So we can, for example, monitor how much energy is being used for domestic water heating, how much pumping energy is being used, how energy is used for both back-of-house and front-of-house lighting to show where each store is spending money on energy.” To minimise energy use, Antler Air Systems has designed the HVAC systems to maintain optimum environmental conditions with utmost efficiency. “Most retail establishments run HVAC all of the time people are in the building, but you don’t need to do that to maintain a comfortable environment,” Smith explains. “It’s win- win because it saves energy, which we are able to prove using the energy meters and it saves on running hours to improve longevity of the plant.” The meter also provides information to the BEMS for when the store needs to start load-shedding, which is important for those stores where capacity of the power supply to the building is, in Smith’s words “on the light side”. He says the worst-case scenario is on a very hot day when the air conditioning is working hard and the store might have to shed some of the HVAC load to prevent any major power supply problems. “It is better to have the store a couple of degrees

Antler Air Systems is using the EM210 meters to monitor Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the incoming power supply. THD is a measurement that tells you how much of the distortion of a voltage or current is due to harmonics in the signal. Because Carlo Gavazzi’s meters measure the power quality, Antler Air Systems is able to monitor the power supply for power surges and distortions.
The system has been so successful that Antler Air Systems is rolling out the metering solution across all of its client’s retail stores.
