SPONSORS INSTALLATION NEWS

The first UK installaon of Carrier’s new ultra low Global Warming Potenal (GWP) AquaForce 30XAV chiller operang on HFO R1234ze refrigerant has been completed at Gatwick Airport

Selected as a replacement for an ageing air-cooled screw chiller, the project is part of a major upgrade at Jubilee House, the administrative offices of Gatwick Airport. Carrier’s AquaForce 30XAV with Greenspeed Intelligence was selected by Gatwick Airport as a solution to help meet the airport’s strict environmental policy, set out in its Decade of Change vision and Cooling Strategy beyond 2020. The new policy includes goals to transition away from high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants and targets to reduce carbon emissions by 50 per cent, energy consumption by 20 per cent, and securing 25 per cent of its energy from renewable sources. The chiller uses refrigerant R-1234ze with a GWP rating of less than one,

has low sound output and high resilience due to its dual refrigeration circuit. Carrier’s Greenspeed Intelligence system delivers high efficiency by precisely matching cooling output with the load using a fine-control inverter. This optimises efficiency particularly at part load conditions, which represents the majority of the time in the UK. The chiller’s excellent efficiency results in a significantly lower carbon footprint and lower running costs over its operational lifetime.

Jack Hartland, principal mechanical engineer at Gatwick Airport, said: “We have set ambitious targets for the environmental performance of all aspects of Gatwick’s operations, and the energy efficiency and carbon status of our buildings are key

elements. Based on ultra-low GWP refrigerant R-1234ze, the new Carrier chiller delivers in relation to both efficiency and carbon, and has helped us achieve the outstanding environmental performance our strategy requires.”

Manchester Central Convenon Complex is an awardwinning venue in the heart of Manchester, an iconic city feature for over 130 years. The complex was originally Manchester Central Railway Staon, one of the city's main railway terminals

With the capacity to handle large-scale conferences and exhibitions, good car parking and traffic management is of great importance. Luceco has recently supplied over 550 Climate luminaires to relight the parking facilities. With cost effectiveness in mind as well as striving to improve the complex’s carbon footprint, ageing T8 fluorescent fittings were removed and replaced with energy efficient 6ft twin output LED luminaires. Luceco was chosen above other lighting manufactures due to the performance of the Climate luminaire and the significant energy savings that could be achieved.

Climate Extra is a robust LED IP65 rated luminaire offering an efficacy of 140Llm/cW with increased performance for improved energy efficiency. Available with integral microwave sensors in on /off or 10 per cent corridor function or batten fit PIR sensors, Climate Extra is also available with DALI drivers and emergency back-up variants including Self-Test.

An opal diffuser enhances appearance and uniformity, and a polycarbonate construction with stainless steel anti-tamper clips ensures a sturdy luminaire that is a cost-effective alternative to traditional fluorescent luminaires for many industrial applications.

The Greater Manchester Exhibition Centre or G-Mex Centre was opened by the Queen in 1986 and in 2001, the Manchester International Convention Centre was added. In January 2007 it was renamed Manchester Central, in memory of the former station. Manchester Central Convention Complex now includes an 804-seat Auditorium and 1800m² of exhibition or conference space. The Complex’s world class philosophy is evident throughout the facilities they offer, including energy efficient and cost-effective lighting operation in their car parks utilising LED luminaires from Luceco.

Refurbished oce facility uses Reggiani’s Yori fings to produce the right light for newlycreated recepon area

A selection of Reggiani’s aesthetically- pleasing Yori luminaires have been specially chosen for use throughout the reception area of the newly-revamped Davidson House, situated in the centre of Reading close to The Oracle shopping centre and the mainline train station. The 10,940 sq ft space has undergone a complete uplift with the introduction of a totally refurbished, well-lit public walkway area through the building which leads seamlessly into the warm and welcoming new reception area.

The refurbishment was designed to provide the owners with a more distinctive and inviting entrance that reidentifies Davidson House as a contemporary, forward-looking office space. Working with dn-a architecture, leading lighting design firm Light Bureau were given responsibility for the

lighting throughout the exterior and ground floor spaces and specified Reggiani’s Yori fittings with a view to providing a lighting solution that was consistent in intensity and colour, which would enhance the natural wood design and help bring the exterior and interior spaces together. The external public walkway now incorporates a warm palette of natural materials including a timber fin design ceiling structure which links the north and south entrances as well as seamlessly connecting to the central interior space. Reggiani’s dimmable, track-mounted

22W LED large Yori fittings with a 30- degree beam angle, complete with a recessed honeycomb accessory, were installed between the internal timber fins to create a soft, welcoming and relaxing atmosphere to the waiting

lounge and also to support visual continuity with the adjacent passageway. With the reception area also containing large floor-to-ceiling windows to the front of the building, the soft level of lighting complements and provides a perception of depth to the building’s façade when viewed from the outside.

In contrast, the front desk located at the very heart of the building was expected to be a functional and fast- moving space that required a higher level of illumination and uniformity. For this, Light Bureau again chose Reggiani’s dimmable, large Yori fittings in black, but this time with a 52-degree beam angle on two rows of track suspended from the concrete ceiling to illuminate key vertical surfaces, support wayfinding and to entice visitors further into the interior space.

Reggiani’s elegant suspended Yori linear fitting in black was also installed to provide a good, uniform light immediately above the building reception desk.

In complementing the natural materials used in the reception area Reggiani’s stylish fittings have once again helped create a well-lit, warm, welcoming and comfortable visual environment for staff and visitors alike.

Established mechanical contractor, A C Engineers installed two Extreme 500 litre stainless steel loading

cylinders. The indirect hot water generators provide domestic hot water to numerous showers, wash basins and sinks around the Centre. The Extreme is designed to maximise a condensing boilers efficiency by operating at a t of 30°C on

the primary side and can produce in excess of 2500l/hr at 60°C.

Supplied with an unvented kit the Extreme can deliver secondary water at six bar and comes complete with a 50 litre potable vessel that accommodates both cylinder expansion and approximately 60 litres of secondary system expansion.
