OUR SELECTION is Lubaina Himid’s 1991 Between the Two My Heart is Balanced painting from the Tate’s collection. We are drawn to its portrayal of two women on a boat, as well as to the artist herself, a British woman of colour. Tis piece resonates deeply as it potentially draws on themes relating to
the liberation of women, especially of black women.
Himid’s work addresses the slave industry and institutional invisibility. Tese themes are critical to examine and explore, to this day and beyond, as is the concept of being an individual and part of a larger collective.
