Dom West is the new sales director for West Fraser, UK and Ireland. With an extensive career in key sales positions – most recently as sales director and interim vice-president at Aliaxis UK – Mr West’s role will encompass managing the sales team and wide-ranging customer base, looking for growth opportunities and promoting the company’s strong technological and environmental innovations.
“I am looking forward to leading the already well-established sales organisation in the UK and Ireland,” said Mr West. “As well as driving the sales of West Fraser’s leading OSB, MDF and chipboard products, I will be working with our team to identify new opportunities for growth. I will be focused on establishing early working relationships with our customers and learning all about our products and value-added services. “Also, we are in the process of evolving our sales organisation and I will be supporting our senior sales managers in the recruitment process,” he continued. “I am excited about furthering our environmental status and messaging. More and more of us are aware of our impact on the environment; so being able to represent a business whose products are net carbon negative is important to me. “Finally, my family was involved for many years within the timber industry in France, starting a sawmilling business in the early 1950s, around the same time as the Ketcham brothers started their first planing mill in Quesnel. So, it’s great for me to be able to continue our family tradition too.”
Lathams Purfleet legend Barry Jarvis retires
to supporting and mentoring the next generation of “Timber-vangelists”. Never seen without his trademark pair of shorts (which it’s rumoured he wears 365 days a year!) and trusty tape measure, Mr Jarvis currently runs the warehouse’s European redwood timber section as a selector, product mentor and measuring trainer.

On August 31 this year, Lathams bids a fond farewell to Barry Jarvis, redwood warehouse supervisor at its Purfleet depot. A timber man through-and-through and a Lathams institution, Mr Jarvis has been with the business for over half a century, starting at the Clapton depot in 1970 aged just 17.
For 52 years his infectious enthusiasm, passion for timber and hard work have been an inspiration to his Lathams colleagues, as well as his commitment
“My time at Lathams has been exciting and full of variety,” he said. “Starting on the barges taking deliveries of timber, things were very different back then! Working in the timber industry has been my one and only job and it’s been an interesting and enjoyable one. Lathams has given me many opportunities to grow in the business and, while I’m looking forward to my retirement, I will miss being part of the Purfleet team.”
When he finally hands his tape measure in at the end of August, he will be greatly missed by everyone at Purfleet and the wider Lathams business.

Obituary – Ralph Stanton Ralph Stanton passed away at the end of
April at the age of 97.
Mr Stanton, who was active in the timber industry – and in particular in the plywood sector – began his career in 1947. He worked for Thames Plywood in Barking for more than 30 years, including a stint in Brazil. Thames had started in the UK as a result of the founders fleeing Germany where the Nazis took over the founding company. Mr Stanton was involved in re-establishing the company in Germany post war.
He then joined S Silverman & Son in 1979 where he was sales director for 15 years until his retirement.
Mr Stanton was involved in bringing many timber products to the UK – bi-fold doors at the Barbican and plastic layered ply for the ice rinks at Broadgate Centre to name two.
