Letter from the Editor & Publisher, continued... A MARYLAND HORSE COUNCIL PUBLICATION

Congressman Harris has not responded to T e Equiery’s request for comment. Again this session, the SAFE Act (Safeguard

American Food Exports) has been introduced in both the House (H.R. 961) and the Senate (S. 2006). T e SAFE Act endeavors to end the export and transport of American horses, bur- ros and other equines abroad to be slaughtered for human consumption. T e Act also stipu- lated that horse slaughter operations (which have been closed domestically for years) will remain illegal in the United States. Currently, there are 167 co-sponsors in the US House of Representatives and 4 co-sponsors in the US Senate. Last year’s version of the bill (SAFE Act of 2018, H.R. 113) was co-sponsored by 219 Representatives. Please consider writing your Representa-

tives and Senators to ask them to support these bills. T e passage of both bills will ensure help ensure the welfare of our Maryland horses for generations to come.

T e country’s top hunter and jumper riders and horses are show- cased in this annual show, many of which go on to compete at the Washington International Horse Show in October. In October, the world descends on Maryland and DC with the country’s two biggest inter- national events. October 17 - 20 is the Fair Hill International in Elkton where top eventers compete at the CCI3* and CCI4* levels. T e US Eventing Young Event Horse East Coast Championships will also run during this time

at Fair Hill. A few days later, the Washington International Horse Show begins in DC on October 22 and runs through October 27. In- ternational hunters and jumpers take over the Capital One Arena with world class compe- tition. T ere’s also Shetland Pony Racing and much more fun for everyone! MHC’s annual meeting will take place in An- napolis this November. T e date is to be deter- mined but all members are invited to come and have their voices heard.
