Maryland Will Miss... James Anderson Miller, Jr., of Silver Run


died on June 19 at the age of 72. Miller was born in Baltimore and graduated from Mer- genthaler Vocational Technical High School in 1965. Miller served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1971. He then com- pleted his National Joint Apprenticeship & Training by the Committee for the Electrical Industry. Miller became a Master Electrician, a trade that he worked at all his life, until his re- tirement in 2017. Miller was one of the found- ers of the Wakefi eld Valley Pony Club in 1985. He was active in his daughter Michelle’s pony club experience and continued his love of the sport by building many jumps for the Mary- land Combined Training Association (MCTA) during the 1980s and 1990s. Some of his best cross-country jumps were built at Jackson Hole Farm and for the Jenny Camp Horse Trials.


James Polk Farber died on July 25 at the


age of 86. He was an early member of the Middletown Valley Hunt Club (now New Market-Middletown Valley Hounds) and was the founder of Middletown Valley Beagles. He hunted with the foot pack for 26 years and was MFH until his death. Both packs are housed on the Farber family farm near Middletown. Before his hunting career, Farber served in the U.S. Air Force and was later a Foreign Service offi cer from 1958 to 1983. After retiring, he worked for General Dynamics in the corporate international department. He was also active


in the sport of rugby and was president of the Maryland-Northern Virginia-DC Rugby Ref- erees’ Association for several years.


Redmond C.S. Finney of Upperco died on


July 31 at the age of 89. Finney graduated from the Gilman School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master’s from Harvard University. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and then returned to Gilman in 1954 as a history, mathematics and religion teacher. He also coached the school’s football, wrestling and lacrosse teams. Finney became the school’s headmaster in 1968. He was a co-founder of the Gilman Upward Bound program, which was a federally funded educational program for children from impov- erished backgrounds. Once he retired, he lived at his son’s farm in Upperco where he bred T oroughbred racehorses.
