New Equine Welfare Committee: METS and MHC Invited to Participate

MHC President Neil Agate and Executive Director Carrie Hull met at the Maryland Department of Agriculture for the first Equine Welfare Committee meeting of the Maryland Horse Industry Board. Nearly 20 stakeholders, including our very own METS Director Brittney Vallot and METS Program Coordinator Emily Stakem, and MHC Legisla- tive Committee Chair Jane Seigler, spent several hours discussing and brainstorming ways to collaborate across all aspects of the equine welfare industry. Individuals from across the state made the journey to Annapo- lis and it was an extremely productive day. Look for more information over the next few months about the committee’s initiatives as we iron out a strategic plan for 2020. Equine welfare continues to be a top priority of all equine stakeholders in the state.

Farm Stewardship: Did you hear? Jane Tery, chair of our very own Farm Stewardship Committee, has

been appointed to the Advisory Council of the Equine Land Conversa- tion Resource, a Kentucky based national organization, dedicated to the preservation of land for equestrian use. Jane founded the MHC Farm Stewardship Committee and continues to promote the stewardship of

equine lands through sound environmental practices. Under her lead- ership, MHC promoted the Maryland Association of Soil Conserva- tion Districts’ Farm Stewardship Certification and Assessment Program (FSCAP) for horse farms, raising the number of certified horse farms from one to over thirty! MHC and the entire Maryland horse commu- nity congratulate Jane on this wonderful opportunity! Read more in this month’s “News & Views.”

2020 Legislative Session: It’s just around the corner It might be November, but before you know it the MD General As-

sembly will be in session. Te MHC Legislative Committee has already been working intensely on equine-related bills. In fact, MHC will be co-hosting with TROT (Trail Riders of Today) and the MD Farm Bureau, a Grassroots Legislative Workshop on Janu- ary 4th from 10am to 3pm at the MD Farm Bureau Headquarters in Davidsonville, Maryland. Tis will be an educational workshop, focused on helping individuals learn how to make their voices heard with public officials. More details to follow. Check your emails and social media for the official invitation and agenda to be released this month. Tis work- shop is limited to 55 people, so sign up early! Tis is the first in a series of collaborative workshops to come.
