Maryland Will Miss... Laurel Park backstretch worker and outrider
Charles Linton died on September 28. A memo- rial service was held on October 8 at the track, and Linton’s ashes were spread over the finish line. Retired trainer Vinnie Blengs died on Octo-
ber 5 at the age of 90. A native of New England, Blengs had racing stables in Maryland and Flor- ida and often shipped-in to New York tracks. At the time of his death, Blengs was living in Flor- ida. Before becoming a trainer, Blengs served in the US Army. Blengs won his first race in 1949 and retired in 2010. His top-earning horse was Dr. Root, winner of the GI Sword Dancer H. at Belmont Park in 1991. Tat same year, he won
the Training Title at Laurel Park. Champion steeplechase jockey Douglas Reid
Small, Jr., suffered an injury while mountain biking in Fair Hill and died peacefully on Octo- ber 11. He was 76. According to Central Entry Office, Small won 125 times out of 943 starts. He also finished second 142 times and third 119 times. His first recorded start was March 1966 riding Tres Brut to a seventh place finish in the Maiden Hurdle at Atlanta Hunts. Later that month, he notched his first win in the Allowance Flat at the Tryons Hunts riding Scotch Lad II. His first win over fences was aboard Susto in the Allowance Steeplechase at the Aqueduct Races in May 1966. Small retired from racing in Octo-
ber 1988 and changed career paths. He founded Waterbury Associates with his wife, Lori. Te company designed and built custom post-and- beam and historic-reproduction homes. He also was a landscape designer. Longtime Maryland-based trainer Donald
Eugene Souder died on October 16 at the age of 85. He began training in 1979 earning 255 career wins and nearly $4 million. He typically kept a small stable at Laurel Park. One of Souder’s top horses was multiple stakes winner Higher Strata. Te Maryland-bred, also owned by Souder, won the Mister Diz, Maryland City and Endless Sur- prise stakes races at Laurel Park.
