For 200 years the voters in Sussex County Delaware returned to the County Courthouse in Georgetown to hear the town crier announce the winners of the election. Traditionally, only the results from Sus- sex Country are read because as was noted, “Only those results were important to the folks here.” T e celebration that surrounded the day was centered on “Burying the Hatchet,” which would put the political tensions from the campaign in the past. Opposing candidates, winners and losers, rode together in a parade symbolizing the spirit of putting their diff erences in the past. T e tradition morphed into a carnival-like celebration with an ox roast, music, vendors, and tables full of food. Nearby Maryland residents joined in the celebration arriving by car-

riage and often transporting the Delaware politicians. Nutter Marvel spearheaded the notion that the carriages should be returned to the forefront of the parade. Carriages, many supplied by Marvel from his antique collection, returned in the 1950s. Hence the tradition of Re- turn Day in Delaware continues where Maryland carriage enthusiasts still play a part in the celebration.
