FRENCH STUDY GUIDE 2017
SL Immersion offers an alternative way of learning French, where you are hosted by your teacher; Alliance Française holds a variety of clubs and French-inspired events
represented by a school building; we are teachers who open the doors of our homes to offer authentic immersion
programmes. Students learn the language with classes but they also share la vie française with meals, sports and cultural outings – as the teacher serves as the guide. These sojourns are fully customised, tailor-made for each participant.”
There are between one and four adult students participating at one time. The demographic includes business leaders, expats, retirees, groups of friends, or a couple who wish to learn French together. Sometimes entire families sign up for SL Immersion while they are en vacances.
Courses take place in the morning, followed by a shared lunch where the acquired language skills are put into practice with everyday conversation. Afternoons are comprised of recreational and cultural activities, based on the students’ interests and where the séjours are taking place. Some professors are located in cities on the Côte d’Azur, others in the countryside in Languedoc, Provençal villages, or near the vineyards of Burgundy or Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here are some examples of excursions: kayaking in the Luberon, outdoor yoga in a nature preserve near Montpellier, city tours in Avignon or Nice, cooking classes, wine tastings, and museum visits.

Former students appreciate the teachers’ hospitality and professionalism. Jake says, “Beyond all expectations: I was a complete beginner but somehow Maryse and I covered so much material. It has been totally unbelievable. I learned at least the same as I would have in one year at university.” Tess explains, “Celtina was very attentive and flexible and adapted the course to focus on the areas where I needed improvement. I would recommend SL Immersion to anyone learning French.” Prices vary based on the teacher and the length of stay. The base price for one, all- inclusive week – with 20 private courses, full board, three activities, accommodation at teacher’s home – is €1,200. Tel: +33 (0)6 26 57 25 10

Alliance Française: to every corner of the globe… Founded in Paris in 1883, Alliance Française is a global network of 850 chapters in 136 countries on five continents. More than half a million students pass through their doors every year. The Paris headquarters on Boulevard Raspail is one of the oldest schools in France dedicated to teaching French as a foreign language, and it welcomes more than 10,000 students every year. This is where the FLE (Français Langue Étrangère) teaching programme was first established, and today it’s the benchmark curriculum for
learning the French language anywhere in the world. Alliance Française doesn’t just offer excellent language instruction; AF is known for a rich cultural programme, hosting myriad events like Ciné-Club film screenings, photography and art exhibitions, literary rencontres with best-selling authors, and gastronomic festivals. In Washington DC, there’s an annual fashion show called ‘Beyond the Little Black Dress’ which has become a popular event in the District. In fact, the Alliance Française Washington DC has become renowned for its year-round calendar of French- inspired events, which draws the crowds for a dose of France in the US capital. Concerts, food tastings, the ‘Beaujolais and beyond’ celebration, French games night, lectures and more. On the west coast, you’ll also find an exciting events calendar in AF locations like Seattle, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and the AF San Francisco, which was the first AF chapter in the United States, founded in 1889 after the Gold Rush. Language classes run the gamut from general courses to themed workshops on wine or film. The Alliance Française de Sydney offers language classes and monthly cultural events for Australian francophiles. The beauty of enrolling at Alliance Française is that you can start in one location – say Washington DC, San Francisco, London, Hong Kong or Toronto
– and transition seamlessly to another AF establishment. You’ll find Alliance Française chapters all over France – in Lyon, Nice, Montpellier, and the magnificent Breton port of St Malo.
In buzzed-about Bordeaux, the Alliance Française Bordeaux Aquitaine (AFBA) is situated in Centre-Ville, a 10-minute walk from the iconic Opera house. AFBA favours an action-oriented approach to language instruction, whereby students implement both linguistic and cultural skills in realising a concrete task. For better integration into their new environment, students are quickly immersed in la vie Bordelaise, meeting and conversing with locals. City tours are arranged on a complimentary basis, as well as gastronomic discoveries and dégustations – after all, this is the wine capital of the world!
Former students praise the rigorous academic instruction and the diverse mélange of individuals, who come from all over the world. “The reputation of the Alliance Française is well known everywhere,” explains Laura L. about her decision to choose AFBA. “Plus, Bordeaux seemed like a beautiful city – and I was not wrong!”
There are lots of advantages with AFBA,” Laura continues. “After studying the language for four years in Spain, I was able finally to master French in a very short period of time at AFBA.”
