Grape Harvest Festival of Montmartre Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre October 5-9, 2016 You wouldn’t normally associate urban Paris with wine-making, yet this quarter in the north of the capital has been hosting its Fête des Vendanges since all the way back in 1934, and attracts over 500,000 fans of the fermented grape. It’s all thanks to a tiny working vineyard in the shadow of Sacre-Coeur called the Clos Montmartre, which yields around 1,500 bottles a year, most of it auctioned for charity during the festival.
Many other wines from all over France and beyond will also be available for tasting. www.fetedesvendanges

Menton Lemon Festival Fête du Citron February 11-March 1, 2017 Now in its 84th year, Menton’s Fête du Citron celebrates this Provence town’s position as one of Europe’s most important lemon producers. It attracts around 240,000 visitors every year and squeezes in 145 tonnes of citrus fruit. On show are enormous citrus-fruit sculptures, light shows, bands, dancing, and both night-time and daytime carnival-style parades where some very juicy lemons (plus more than a few oranges) take centre stage.

THE UK’S VERY OWN FRENCH FESTIVAL If you can’t make it over to France this year then you could always celebrate French culture at the Altrincham French Festival in the leafy suburbs of south Manchester. Now in its fourth year, it includes live classical music, a carnival parade, a Bastille evening, French cuisine, fi reworks, football, cycling and a baking competition called La Grande Bake Off. “Brexit is the word on everyone’s lips this year,” says festival director Zainul Sachak, “but we hope families in Altrincham will come together once again to sample some French delights.” July 8-10, 2016.
